A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse to step into a a Matron role to provide maternity leave cover. This role would be ideal for an individual who is looking to further develop both their managerial and operation skills as well as delivering the quality and safety agenda within nursing.

Main duties of the job

· To be responsible for the professional leadership of the nurses on the Cardiology, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgical wards, demonstrating a supportive and flexible leadership approach and a proactive, responsible attitude so as to promote confidence in the team and the service.

· To explore current practice, identifying areas for development, and planning the appropriate change using research and experience to evaluate the outcomes.

· To lead in innovation, change, service development within the Cardiovascular Care group.

· To be responsible for the quality of the patient’s environment in order to improve the patient’s experience. To co-ordinate practice for multiple clinical areas.

· To ensure a high standard of financially effective care delivery across defined clinical areas.

· To work as part of the cardiovascular senior nursing and management team to provide the delivery of safe and effective care of cardiovascular patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· To be proactive in identifying areas for clinical improvement and implement remedial action as necessary.

· Facilitate the cascade of information ensuring awareness of Trust and NHS initiatives, supporting staff discussion and responding to feedback.

· Ensures compliance with the Trust's Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trusts Race Equality Scheme and the Trust's duty to positively promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people ensuring services are responsive to the needs of equality groups.

· To ensure that the Care Group is fully aware of the Trust’s safeguarding Procedures and that strategies and plans are in place across the care group to accurately identify children and vulnerable adults at risk of abuse.

· To ensure that the Care Group is fully aware of the Trust Major Incident Plan and has full understanding of its role within this.

Personal Professional Development

· To adhere to NMC Professional Code of Conduct at all times.

· To act up for the Head of Nursing as required.

· To ensure clinical and administrative policies and procedures are adhered to.

· To maintain clinical competence and credibility.

· To take personal responsibility for own professional growth and to develop agreed action plan with the Head of Nursing.

Financial Responsibility

· To work within your identified budget and assist the ward / unit managers to work in the same way

· In conjunction with the Head of Nursing, support the sisters/charge nurses to maximise resources, ensuring that Care Group priorities are met and kept within the allocated budget.

· To ensure procedures and satisfactory controls are in place and adhered to in order to maintain financial balance

· To participate in maximising revenue by identifying potential within the Trust and new products to generate further income

· To participate in financial meetings, suggesting and implementing cost improvement ideas

General

· The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountability associated with this post.

· To observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.

· To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff, in accordance with local policy and information governance guidance and regulations.

· To be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.

Infection Control statement

The post holder has an important responsibility and contribution to make infection control a priority within the Trust. The post holder must be familiar with infection control policies, procedures and hygiene practices within this role. The requirements for this are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures which will be made clear during induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be adhered to all times.

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • • RN with evidence of post registration education at degree level.
  • • Management or leadership course.
  • • Clinical expertise and previous operational managerial experience in an acute cardiac setting
  • • Experience of influencing and working across professional boundaries.
  • • Proven success at managing complex clinical and organisational change while maintaining service quality.
  • • Experience of developing nursing staff. An ability and interest in coaching staff to improve performance
  • • Demonstrates awareness of priorities, deals with workload, adapts to changing requirements, and uses initiative. Able to work under pressure to meet deadlines
