Mid level Frontend Engineer UK

Smart Pension
London
Smart Pension was founded by finance and tech professionals to make workplace pensions and savings simpler and more accessible. Our mission? To improve long-term financial wellbeing-for everyone.

We believe in building products that create lasting impact, and we're just getting started. Over the next 12 months, you'll help shape an exciting new part of our platform: bringing our pension products directly to individuals, helping more people gain control of their future.

Our approach is:
  • Sustainable - Our investments follow a responsible, forward-thinking strategy while maximising long-term returns.
  • Climate-conscious - Our default growth fund targets net zero by 2040-ten years ahead of most providers.
At Smart, we put people first. We:
  • Offer hybrid work: most teams are in-office two days a week or less.
  • Support flexible hours that fit your life.
  • Encourage community involvement (e.g. RailsGirls, volunteering).
HOW WE WORK:

We care about quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement. And we're always open to trying better tools.
  • Clean Code: We aim to write code that humans can read and maintain, so we can spend our time building great features that impact our customers.
  • Collaborative Culture: Code reviews are part of our daily rhythm. Everyone's voice is valued, and we share knowledge openly.
  • Thoughtful Technical Choices: We take time to tackle technical debt early, so our systems remain healthy and adaptable.
WHO YOU ARE:

You're a frontend engineer with professional experience building modern web applications. You enjoy creating thoughtful user experiences, writing maintainable code, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

You're confident tackling features independently and improving how your team works.

We're looking for someone with hands-on experience in:
  • Core web technologies - JavaScript (ES6+), HTML, CSS, and the DOM
  • Modern React - You're comfortable with hooks, component composition, and managing state
  • TypeScript - You use types to write safer, more predictable code
  • Remix or Nextjs (or you're excited to learn remix ) - You understand how to navigate the frameworks and how SSR works
  • Testing - You've used tools like Vitest, Jest, or Testing Library to test components and user flows
  • Communication - You write clearly, ask thoughtful questions, and give kind, constructive feedback
  • A keen eye for UX - You'll work with our UX team to adjust project requirements
Most importantly: You're eager to learn, teach, and contribute to something meaningful.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Contribute to front-end projects of all sizes-from improving engagement to building new journeys from the ground up
  • Write clean, maintainable code (we'll support you as you grow your skills)
  • Participate in code reviews and share feedback
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, QA, back-end and mobile developers
  • Take part in knowledge-sharing across our wider front-end community
  • Work with your Tech Lead to shape a clear career path
OUR TEAM CULTURE:

We're shaking things up in pensions-a sector not known for moving fast-and we need creative, collaborative people to help us do it right.

If you enjoy:
  • Contributing ideas and solving real-world problems
  • Working in a team that values kindness, trust, and autonomy
  • Delivering software that improves people's lives
...then you'll feel right at home here.

We believe that better tech comes from diverse perspectives. We're proud of our inclusive culture and are always looking for ways to improve it.
  • We host and mentor at RailsGirls and similar events
  • We run internal hackathons to explore fresh ideas
  • We want everyone to feel confident sharing their voice
WHO WE ARE

We work in partnerships with governments and financial institutions in the UK and internationally. Our cloud-native digital platform is revolutionising how people around the world think about, and save for, their retirement.

At heart, we're a financial technology business. What we do is all about innovation, and using the power of digital change to put the customer first. Our Engineers will tell you that working at Smart gives you the opportunity to play your part in developing world-class technological solutions, working with - and learning from - like-minded people.

You'll also find that, across our business, our colleagues love Smart's culture, and how what we do means better financial outcomes for savers. That feels worthwhile, and it means that what we do, collectively, goes way beyond the nine to five of a typical working day.

Don't just take our word for it - you can see what our colleagues say about working at Smart on LinkedIn Life and Glassdoor .

BENEFITS

At Smart, one of the eight principles we work to is "We want happy and good people in our team". We created a list of benefits that helps us achieve this goal:
