Casualty Peril Lead
Reporting to the Head of Exposure Management
London based with Hybrid (min 2 days in the office)
This role would suit an Exposure Management Expert with significant understanding of underwriting. Or, an Underwriter or Pricing Actuary with deep experience in the Casualty space.
The Casualty Peril Lead is an exciting new opportunity for not only catastrophe modelling professional’s but also individuals with backgrounds in underwriting or pricing who are keen to broaden their experience. This role is designed to drive our risk management strategy in Casualty lines, offering unparalleled exposure to our most senior underwriting leaders. The role offers the chance to challenge and question decisions at the highest levels, making a significant impact on our approach to exposure management and positively impacting the strategic underwriting decisions our business makes.
Reporting to the Head of Exposure Management you will be supported by a Casualty Emerging Risks Lead and will have access to an Operations & Development team and Exposure Management analysts, providing a robust environment to make an impact. The Exposure Management team plays a vital role at Hiscox in understanding, advising, and reporting on the level of risk being written by the business and you will be expected to partner with our senior underwriters and other stakeholders to influence and challenge business decisions.
Casualty lines now represent approximately 50% of the Group’s net premium base and annual profits, with plans for further growth. Along with this growth in premium comes an increase in exposures. Our Casualty RDSs are now in many cases larger than our natural catastrophe RDSs, and we have an ambition to develop an (at least) equivalent Risk Management & Analytics capability in this area. This is an area in which we have invested time, people, and process, but it still provides an opportunity to be fully shaped & developed by you.
Success will result in:
- Clarity into the bets (profits vs risk) we are taking
- A transparent, managed approach to emerging risk identification with timely course corrective actions
- Measurement and communication of our largest risks linked to an effective reinsurance strategy
This will be achieved by:
- Shaping strategic decisions with your insights and analysis
- Influencing casualty risk practices across the organisation and building strong relationships with senior stakeholders, enhancing our risk culture
- Collaborating with underwriting leaders to support strategy development by identifying risks and adapting our coverages to mitigate the impact of emerging Casualty Risks
- Defining and delivering the Casualty Exposure Management plan
- Developing a rich understanding of our coverages and sources of risk
- Developing and managing the Casualty Exposure Management loss scenarios
- Bringing together the key analytics and metrics that describe our Casualty portfolio along with the Exposure Management and horizon scanning activities for these lines
You will be responsible for:
- Defining measures and the operational processes and structure needed to monitor and make timely smart decisions on our casualty book
- Challenging our CUOs, Casualty Divisional Directors, and Heads of Exposure Management to adapt their portfolios and respond to emerging Casualty risks.
- Work across the business to establish Early warning indicators that help identify trends that we need to respond to.
- Working with CUOs to identify, understand, and mitigate, casualty risks.
Person Specification
- You are likely to be an Exposure Management Expert with significant understanding of underwriting, or an Underwriter or Pricing Actuary with deep experience in the Casualty space, bringing with you a combination of industry knowledge, business insight and technical skills
- You will have the ability to engage and influence senior leaders, presenting complex risk concepts in a clear and actionable manner gaining commitment to get things done, on time, across various teams
- Attention to detail – tenacity to focus on the detail when it’s required
- Strong academic background in an appropriate field
About Hiscox
As an international specialist insurer we are far removed from the world of mass market insurance products. Instead we are selective and focus on our key areas of expertise and strength - all of which is underpinned by a culture that encourages us to challenge convention and always look for a better way of doing things.
We insure the unique and the interesting. And we search for the same when it comes to talented people. Hiscox is full of smart, reliable human beings that look out for customers and each other. We believe in doing the right thing, making good and rebuilding when things go wrong. Everyone is encouraged to think creatively, challenge the status quo and look for solutions.
Scratch beneath the surface and you will find a business that is solid, but slightly contrary. We like to do things differently and constantly seek to evolve. We might have been around for a long time (our roots go back to 1901), but we are young in many ways, ambitious and going places.
Some people might say insurance is dull, but life at Hiscox is anything but. If that sounds good to you, get in touch.
Diversity and Hybrid workingAt Hiscox we care about our people. We hire the best people for the job and we’re committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success.
We have also learned over the past few years that working life doesn’t always have to be in the office, and now it is safe to do so we have introduced hybrid working to encourage a healthy work life balance.
This hybrid working model is set by the team rather than the business to enable you to manage your own personal work-life balance. We see it as the best of both worlds; structure and sociability on one hand, and independence and flexibility on the other.
