Attendance Officer | Acton, London | January Start
Attendance Officer required for a January start
Opportunity within a welcoming and ambitious school in Acton
Key role supporting pupil attendance, punctuality and engagement
Ideal for an organised professional with excellent communication and administrative skills
About the Role
Our client is looking to appoint a proactive and conscientious Attendance Officer to join its school team in Acton from January. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about improving educational outcomes and understands the importance of regular attendance in helping pupils succeed. The successful candidate will work closely with school leaders, pastoral staff, families and external professionals to monitor attendance, identify concerns and encourage positive attendance habits.
The Attendance Officer will play an important part in maintaining accurate attendance records and ensuring that unexplained absences are followed up promptly. You will be expected to review daily attendance information, contact parents and carers where necessary, maintain detailed records and identify patterns that may indicate a pupil requires additional support. A sensitive, professional and consistent approach will be essential when dealing with families experiencing difficulties.
The role will involve working with the school's safeguarding and pastoral teams to ensure that attendance concerns are handled appropriately. You will help communicate attendance expectations, support the implementation of improvement plans and contribute to initiatives designed to improve punctuality and reduce persistent absence. The successful applicant will need to balance firm expectations with empathy, recognising that each family's circumstances may be different.
This position would suit an experienced school administrator, attendance professional, pastoral assistant or candidate with transferable administrative experience who is confident working with children, families and colleagues.
School Information
The school is based in Acton and is committed to ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to participate fully in school life. Strong attendance and punctuality are regarded as essential foundations for academic progress, positive relationships and personal development.
The wider school team works to create a safe, structured and inclusive environment where pupils understand the importance of attending regularly and arriving on time. Staff collaborate to identify barriers to attendance and provide appropriate support, with a focus on early intervention, clear communication and consistent follow-up.
The successful candidate will become an important member of the pastoral and administrative team, helping the school maintain accurate records and strengthen relationships with parents and carers. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys organisation, problem-solving and making a practical difference to pupils' education.
Responsibilities
Monitor daily pupil attendance and punctuality using the school's management information system.
Follow up unexplained absences and contact parents or carers to establish reasons for non-attendance.
Maintain accurate attendance registers, records, correspondence and intervention logs.
Identify attendance patterns, persistent absence and pupils who may require additional support.
Work with pastoral leaders, safeguarding staff and senior leaders to address attendance concerns.
Support attendance meetings and help prepare relevant reports and documentation.
Communicate school attendance procedures clearly and professionally to families.
Assist with attendance improvement initiatives and monitor progress against agreed targets.
Handle confidential information sensitively and in accordance with school policies and data protection requirements.
Experience and Qualifications
Previous experience in school administration, attendance, pastoral support or a similar administrative role is desirable.
Excellent organisational skills and strong attention to detail.
Confident communication skills when dealing with parents, pupils and school colleagues.
Ability to maintain accurate records and manage competing priorities.
Good IT skills and confidence using databases, spreadsheets and school management systems.
A professional, empathetic and persistent approach to resolving attendance concerns.
Commitment to safeguarding and the welfare of children.
The legal right to work in the UK.
