An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated Senior Pharmacist to join the Liver Pharmacy Team at Kings College Hospital as 9 month secondment cover.
The Liver Unit at King’s College Hospital is a world-renowned tertiary referral centre for liver transplantation, complex hepatology, viral hepatitis, hepatobiliary surgery and liver intensive care.
The post holder deputises for the team leader, Liver and Private Patient Services, and acts as the lead for Liver Transplant Services. As well as providing a highly specialised pharmacy service to the in-patient liver wards and liver theatres, the post holder will also actively participate in pharmacist led outpatient clinics. Excellent communication skills are required as the post holder is expected to provide specialist pharmacy advice to primary and secondary care healthcare professionals and patients.
Main duties of the job
Deputise for the Principal Pharmacist, Hepatology
Act as a specialist role model and an expert in the medical management within the hepatology care group
Lead and manage clinical pharmacy services in the hepatology Care Group in conjunction with the Principal Pharmacist.
Develop and participate in outpatient clinics to deliver and promote high quality, cost-effective and patient-focused pharmaceutical care.
Act as a pharmacist independent prescriber to optimise the care of patients within the hepatology Care Group.
Actively participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, delivering and promoting high quality, cost effective, patient-focused pharmaceutical care.
Promote safe drug use within the Hepatology Care Group specialties.
To work with the Associate Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services to develop, manage and support non-medical prescribing within pharmacy and the Trust.
To provide specialist pharmacist input into the Trust Non-Medical Prescribing Group (NMPG) including the management of Patient Group Directions and Written Instructions.
Development, implementation and audit of local guidelines.
Supervise and train pharmacy staff at ward level.
Provide education and training of healthcare professionals within and outside the Trust.
Financial reporting, drug usage and expenditure forecasting, drug budget management and work on CIPs (cost improvement programmes).
To participate in practice and clinical research and audit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the post holder will be:
Deputise for the Pharmacy Clinical Team Leader, Liver and Private Patient Services.
To lead and manage clinical pharmacy services to liver transplantation, islet cell transplantation and transition in conjunction with the team leader.
To act as a specialist role model and an expert in the management of liver transplantation Ensure a high level of clinical pharmacy input to liver patients
Providing interface and discharge liaison and support.
To actively participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, delivering and promoting high quality, cost-effective, patient-focused pharmaceutical care
To participate regularly in outpatient clinics and other patient programmes as appropriate to deliver and promote high quality, cost-effective and patient-focused pharmaceutical care.
Provide patient and carer education and close liaison across the interface.
Promotion of safe drug use within the speciality.
Development, implementation and audit of local guidelines
Supervise and train pharmacy staff at ward level.
Education and training of healthcare professionals within and outside the Trust relating to liver.
Regular financial reporting, drug usage and expenditure forecasting, and drug budget management
To participate in practice and clinical research and audit
To work with the Pharmacy Clinical Team Leader to extend the boundaries of professional practice within the division
Person specification
Knowledge, skills and experience
Essential criteria
- MPharm (Masters Degree)
- Registered Pharmacist (1 year competency assessed and examined professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council)
- Postgraduate Diploma in pharmacy practice or equivalent qualification / experience
- Specialist clinical knowledge and skills relevant to area of practice
- Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals outside of pharmacy
- Experience of supervising others
- Experience of protocol/guideline development
- Experience of multi-disciplinary team working
- Be able to provide highly complex Information on medicines use, clinical pharmacy and financial issues to all levels of healthcare professionals (up to and including senior consultants/professor level)
- Able to implement and manage change
- Ability to work well under pressure by prioritising and managing time effectively
- Registered independent prescriber of willingness to complete
- Problem-solving skills
- Able to motivate self and others
- Be able to influence junior medical staff, the multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
- Member of the RPS faculty
- Demonstration of advanced practice using evidence mapped to the RPS Advanced Practice Framework
