Lead Superintendent Radiographer - PRUH and South Sites

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced individual to take on the role of Lead Superintendent Radiographer for the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) and South Sites, within the Radiology Care Group at King’s College Hospital.
The post holder will provide senior leadership and operational management across radiology services, working closely with the Radiology Triumvirate, Modality and Site Superintendents, and Clinical Leads. They will oversee radiography staff to ensure high-quality, responsive, and innovative services that meet clinical and performance standards. As a member of the Radiology Management Team, they will contribute to the department’s strategic direction and lead on areas such as workforce planning, service delivery, business development, incident investigations, and Trust-level projects.
We welcome flexible working applications. However, the role requires on-site presence at least 80% of the time to ensure visible leadership and direct staff support.
Main duties of the job
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for Radiology services across PRUH and South Sites.
- Work collaboratively with the Radiology Triumvirate, Modality and Site Superintendents, Clinical Leads, and the wider management team.
- Bring extensive clinical experience in at least two modalities to support safe, high-quality care and strong clinical governance.
- Oversee service delivery, workforce planning, and operational policies in line with Trust and national standards.
- Lead service improvement initiatives, including 7-day working and workforce development.
- Manage delegated budgets and support financial planning, including business cases and capital bids.
- Monitor performance against KPIs and national targets, driving service improvement.
- Lead investigations into incidents and complaints, ensuring learning is shared and embedded.
- Oversee audits, compliance processes, and national accreditation requirements.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and professional development.
- Support staff training, mentorship, appraisals, and engagement with professional networks.
- Build effective relationships with external stakeholders including NHS England, South East London ICB, CQC, HEIs, Primary Care, and other Acute Trusts.
- Ensure compliance with infection control, safeguarding, health and safety, and data protection regulations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Working Relationships
Internal: Director of Operations, Clinical Director (Radiology), Head of Imaging Services, Radiology General Manager, Radiology Deputy General Manager, Modality Leads, Clinical Leads, Quality & Governance Radiographer, Radiology Lead Nurse, Radiology Service Managers, HR, Learning & Development, Emergency Planning, Pharmacy, Radiation Protection.
External: NHS England, South East London ICB, CQC, HEIs, Primary Care Providers, other Acute Trusts.
Clinical Responsibilities
- While primarily a non-clinical leadership role, the post holder may undertake clinical duties when required, maintaining up-to-date competencies.
- Apply extensive clinical experience and specialist knowledge of X-ray and at least one additional modality to advise on service delivery and patient care.
- Support the implementation of clinical guidelines and national standards, contributing to safe, effective, and patient-centred imaging services.
Management Responsibilities
- Support the Radiology Triumvirate in the management of medical staffing, including job planning and recruitment.
- Oversee service planning and delivery, working closely with Modality and Site Superintendents to ensure services are patient-focused, safe, and aligned with Trust objectives.
- Lead local implementation of national and Trust initiatives, such as 7-day working, and service modernisation projects.
- Support strategic direction and operational delivery through attendance at management meetings and contribution to Trust-wide projects.
- Develop and monitor local operational policies, ensuring alignment with Trust strategy and national guidance.
- Lead investigations into incidents and complaints, ensuring timely responses, learning, and dissemination of outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and other statutory requirements, including safe environments, manual handling, and equipment maintenance.
- Oversee the selection and recruitment of radiographers and support staff, chairing appointment panels as required.
- Act as the lead for national reviews, accreditations, and compliance processes relevant to Radiology services at PRUH and South Sites.
Financial Management
- Be accountable for delegated radiology budgets, ensuring cost-effective service delivery and budget compliance.
- Monitor financial performance and take appropriate action to address variances.
- Support the development of cost-reduction, income-generation, and efficiency proposals.
- Authorise expenditure in line with Trust standing financial instructions.
- Contribute to business cases and capital bids for service developments, including equipment procurement and replacement.
- Liaise with support services (e.g., transport, portering, medical records) to ensure effective operational integration.
Performance Management
- Use activity data and performance metrics to monitor and improve service delivery, including capacity and demand analysis.
- Work with the Radiology General Manager and Service Manager to ensure service capacity meets commissioned plans and national targets.
- Support the delivery of national access standards and local KPIs, taking corrective actions where necessary.
- Promote continuous service improvement, including outpatient efficiency, reporting turnaround times, and clinical pathway redesign.
- Oversee accurate data collection and reporting in collaboration with the Service Manager.
- Ensure effective patient access, satisfaction, and clinical quality across imaging services.
- Support audits and benchmarking activities to ensure high-quality service provision.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships across clinical teams and external stakeholders, including NHS London, local commissioners, and regulatory bodies.
Professional and Practice Development, Training & Education
- Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional excellence.
- Support professional development and training for all staff, ensuring compliance with Trust-mandated and role-specific competencies.
- Facilitate team development through mentorship, coaching, and participation in appraisals.
- Contribute to training programmes and induction of new staff.
- Engage with Trust and professional networks to share best practice and drive service innovation.
Research and Audit
- Foster an environment that supports research, innovation, and audit.
- Work with the Radiology Research Manager and Modality Leads to facilitate research activity, ensuring minimal service disruption and appropriate funding.
- Encourage the development of new imaging techniques and service improvement initiatives.
- Oversee completion of the directorate audit plan and ensure audit findings are embedded in clinical practice.

Essential criteria
- Postgraduate level clinical qualification or equivalent experience
- Evidence of continuous professional development
- Experience working as a senior member of a multidisciplinary team
- Knowledge and understanding of service performance targets
- Extensive experience of staff management, including setting objectives, team and individual appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary issues
- Ability to compile and analyse statistics to aid service delivery / development
- Knowledge of current policies and legislation affecting service delivery
Desirable criteria
- Budget management experience including reducing costs, monitoring and determining corrective action
- Developing and implementing strategic plans at service level that enable the attainment of care group objectives
