Clinical Nurse Specialist for GI Cancers | Barts Health NHS Trust
Band 7 GI Cancers Clinical Nurse Specialist
St Bartholomew's Hospital is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our dynamic Gastrointestinal Cancer Multidisciplinary Team.
As the GI Cancer CNS, you will operate autonomously, utilizing your specialist knowledge to lead patient pathways, provide expert advice, and drive service improvement within a prestigious and supportive environment. You will work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team to provide expert advice and support to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals on GI cancers, across both secondary and primary care. The successful candidate will take on a multifaceted role, balancing advanced clinical practice with service development and education:
• Expert Clinical Practice: Act as a key worker for a defined caseload of GI cancer patients, providing specialist assessment, advice, and holistic care from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up.
• Patient Education and Support: Lead patient consultations, providing complex information, emotional support, and acting as the main point of contact for patients and their families.
• MDT Coordination: Ensure seamless coordination of care across the MDT, contributing expert nursing input to treatment planning meetings, and facilitating rapid access to appropriate services.
• Nurse-Led Clinics: Develop and run specialist nurse-led clinics (e.g., pre-treatment assessment, toxicity management, or surveillance).
• Service Development: Participate in audit, research, and quality improvement projects specific to the GI Cancer pathway to enhance the patient experience and clinical outcomes.
• Education: Provide specialist education and mentorship to ward staff, junior nurses, and other healthcare professionals within the hospital and community settings. Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers. The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients. Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together. We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. We value our differences and fully advocate, cultivate and support an inclusive working environment. This role requires a dedicated professional with proven specialist skills:
• Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
• Significant post-registration experience, with substantial experience at Band 6 or above in oncology, palliative care, or a highly relevant acute GI setting.
• Relevant post-registration qualification (e.g., Cancer Care or a specialist clinical module at degree/Master's level).
• Demonstrable evidence of advanced physical assessment skills and autonomous decision-making.
• In-depth knowledge of current evidence-based practice and treatment modalities for GI cancers.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to manage complex conversations. Joining St Bartholomew's Hospital means becoming part of Barts Health NHS Trust, one of the largest and most ambitious trusts in the UK.
• Exceptional Training: Access to internal and external professional development opportunities, including support for Master’s level education.
• A Supportive Team: Work within a collaborative MDT featuring world-class surgeons, oncologists, dietitians, and specialist nurses.
• Inner London Location: Enjoy the benefits of working in a historic central London hospital with excellent transport links.
