Job Title: Manager, Policy

Reporting to (Job Title): Director of Policy

Objective of role: To assist the Director of Policy (DoP) in delivering TheCityUK’s policy programme, in support of TheCityUK’s strategic objective to promote the long-term competitiveness of UK financial and related professional services industry.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

  • With a focus on technology and innovation: Work with the DoP, other colleagues and members to develop and deliver TheCityUK policy projects, positions, outputs, advocacy plans and stakeholder engagement activity to support TheCityUK’s strategy; as well as International Regulatory Strategy Group (IRSG) outputs and advocacy.
    • Lead collaborative work with the DoP, colleagues and members to propose, plan and deliver key pieces of collateral and stakeholder engagement activities on technology and innovation policy. This can involve managing the production and co-ordinating content from member groups, stakeholders, desktop research, interviews and other sources.
    • Work with and provide secretariat support for relevant TheCityUK and IRSG committees, and their chairs, as agreed with the DoP, including: planning and producing meeting agendas, papers for discussion, organising meetings and external speakers, producing the meeting minutes and ensuring follow up actions are completed.
    • Provide briefings for senior colleagues and members in advance of high-level meetings.
    • Take notes at meetings and events and arrange follow up actions as required.
    • Use TheCityUK’s project management framework and tools as appropriate.
    • Contribute to the overall impact of TheCityUK’s policy, advocacy and member engagement work.
    • Carry out any other duties as reasonably instructed.

Person Specification

  • Experience of technology and innovation policy and / or regulation. This may have been gained in a different sector, a public sector body, a regulator, or a company.
    • Experience of the UK policymaking environment, institutions and processes – e.g. industry representative bodies, government, Parliament, regulators, think tanks.
    • Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering policy positions, materials and influencing activity, including responding to government/ regulatory/ Parliamentary consultations/inquiries.
    • Strong collaboration and coordination skills
    • Strong analytical and writing skills.
    • Strong influencing and communication skills.
    • Self-starter, prioritises tasks, well organised, plans ahead and delivers to deadlines, strong attention to detail, conscientious, takes accountability and ownership for delivering high-quality work.
    • Ability to network, develop relationships and work with senior individuals across a range of organisations.
    • Willingness to develop in-depth knowledge of policy matters.
    • Willingness to travel overseas as required.
    • (Desirable) Experience / understanding / interest in financial markets, products, financial sector organisations, economics.
    • (Desirable) Degree educated in a field relevant to financial and related professional services (e.g. finance, economics, law, etc.). This can include an apprenticeship degree.
