Site Assistant | Secondary School | Southwark
The Opportunity
Southwark is a borough that blends historic architecture with state-of-the-art educational campuses. We are seeking a proactive and versatile Site Assistant to join the premises team of a thriving secondary school. In this role, you will be an essential part of the school’s daily operation, ensuring that the learning environment is safe, clean, and fully functional for students, staff, and the wider community.
The Role & Department
You will report directly to the Premises Manager and work alongside a team of Site Assistants and Caretakers.
Secondary school environments are fast-paced; you will manage a wide variety of tasks ranging from emergency repairs to event logistics.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys a physical, hands-on job and takes pride in maintaining high standards across a large, busy site.
Shift patterns may vary, including early morning openings or evening closings to facilitate school lettings and extracurricular activities.
Core Responsibilities
Maintenance & Repairs: Performing basic "first-fix" repairs, including minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, and decorating to ensure the fabric of the building is well-maintained.
Site Security: Assisting with the daily lock-up and unlock procedures, conducting perimeter checks, and ensuring all visitors follow the school’s signing-in and security protocols.
Logistics & Porterage: Moving furniture and equipment to set up for whole-school events such as assemblies, GCSE/A-Level exams, and parents' evenings.
Health & Safety Compliance: Carrying out routine safety checks, including fire alarm testing, flushing water outlets for Legionella prevention, and ensuring all walkways are clear of hazards.
Grounds Maintenance: Keeping the school grounds, play areas, and car parks clean, tidy, and safe, particularly during adverse weather conditions (e.g., gritting during winter).
The Successful Candidate We are looking for a reliable individual with a "can-do" attitude. Requirements include:
Practical Skills: Basic competency in DIY or a trade (plumbing, electrical, or joinery) is highly advantageous.
Physical Fitness: The role involves significant walking, lifting, and working at heights (ladder work), requiring a high level of physical resilience.
Communication: A professional and helpful manner when dealing with teachers, students, and external contractors.
Organisational Skills: The ability to manage a "to-do" list effectively and react quickly to urgent maintenance requests or spills.
Why Join Us?
A stable role within a supportive and collaborative staff team that plays a vital role in student success.
Access to professional development and training in areas such as IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health), COSHH, and Fire Warden duties.
The chance to work in a dynamic Southwark school at the heart of a diverse and ambitious London community.
A clear career path for those looking to progress into Site Management or specialist facilities roles.
