Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant

Marchant Recruitment
London

Primary School – Camden, North London

We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and professional Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant to join our dynamic and inclusive primary school in Camden, North London. This is an outstanding opportunity for a motivated individual who is committed to supporting children with a range of additional needs, helping them to achieve their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our school is proud to serve a diverse community, and we place a strong emphasis on inclusion, equity, and the holistic development of every child. We believe that all children, regardless of ability, deserve access to high-quality education tailored to their individual needs. The SEN provision at our school is carefully structured to provide personalised support while fostering independence, resilience, and a love of learning.

Role Overview

The SEN Teaching Assistant will work closely with class teachers, the SENCo, and other members of the school’s support staff to provide targeted assistance to children with additional educational needs. You will play a vital role in supporting the learning, personal development, and wellbeing of pupils who may have learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, speech and language challenges, social, emotional, or behavioural needs, or physical disabilities.

In this role, you will work both one-to-one and in small groups to deliver differentiated learning activities, support access to the curriculum, and assist with the development of social and emotional skills. You will also work collaboratively with parents, external agencies, and the wider school team to ensure that each child receives comprehensive and personalised support.

Key Responsibilities

The SEN Teaching Assistant will be expected to carry out a broad range of duties, including but not limited to:

  • Supporting children with SEN in one-to-one and small group settings, adapting tasks to meet individual needs

  • Implementing learning programmes under the guidance of the class teacher or SENCo

  • Supporting children’s communication, literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional development

  • Encouraging independence, self-confidence, and positive learning behaviours

  • Assisting with the preparation and adaptation of learning resources to meet individual needs

  • Observing and recording children’s progress, providing feedback to the SENCo and teaching staff

  • Supporting children with physical needs or personal care routines where required

  • Implementing behaviour management strategies as outlined in individual education plans (IEPs) or behaviour support plans

  • Liaising with teachers, SENCo, parents, and external professionals to ensure consistent support

  • Supporting children in accessing classroom activities alongside their peers

  • Maintaining accurate records of interventions, progress, and outcomes

  • Contributing to the creation of a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment

  • Participating in staff training and professional development opportunities

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be compassionate, patient, and committed to supporting children with a range of additional needs. You should have strong communication skills, the ability to build positive relationships, and a genuine interest in making a difference to children’s educational outcomes.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • Experience working with children with SEN in an educational setting

  • Knowledge of different learning difficulties, autism spectrum disorders, and other additional needs

  • Understanding of strategies to support learning, behaviour, and social development

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail

  • Empathy, patience, and a calm approach to challenging situations

  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

A relevant qualification in special educational needs, teaching, or childcare (Level 2 or 3) is desirable but not essential for candidates with significant practical experience and a willingness to engage in ongoing professional development.

Our School and SEN Provision

Our school is committed to creating an inclusive environment where all children feel valued, supported, and encouraged to succeed. The SEN provision is led by an experienced SENCo and is designed to provide targeted support tailored to each child’s individual learning and developmental needs.

We work closely with families to ensure continuity between home and school and maintain open communication to celebrate progress and address challenges. Our staff benefit from a supportive leadership team, access to high-quality resources, and opportunities for professional growth and training.

What We Offer

  • A welcoming, inclusive, and professional school environment

  • A supportive SEN team and collaborative working culture

  • Access to professional development, training, and mentoring

  • Opportunities to contribute to the development of inclusive teaching practices

  • Recognition and appreciation for your contributions to children’s learning and wellbeing

This is a term-time only position and may be offered on a full-time or part-time basis , depending on the needs of the school. It is ideal for candidates seeking a long-term position in a primary school and who are committed to supporting children with additional needs.

Safeguarding

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to enhanced DBS checks, satisfactory references, and relevant pre-employment checks in line with statutory safeguarding guidance.
