Lead Software Engineer, Developer Platform
Company Overview
LEGO Digital Play will bring the LEGO brand into digital entertainment in new, innovative, and wholly-owned ways. Our mission is to ensure the LEGO Brand remains as powerfully a part of children’s lives in the coming decades as it has ever been. We aim to reach every kid on the planet, their parents, and adult fans of LEGO—and provide them with meaningful, magical, and playful new experiences.
We are at the earliest phases of this new company, offering a unique opportunity to build a new entity for the world's most beloved and trusted brand. Our culture is open, collaborative, intellectually rigorous, and creatively vibrant.
LEGO Digital Play is building a proprietary, brand-aligned development platform that will bring digital LEGO to life and deliver a trusted foundation for internal and external developers to build on.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Lead Engineer, Developer Platform, to serve as the hands-on technical leader responsible for architecting, building, and operating the core engineering capabilities that make this platform real, including SDKs, APIs, validation and policy services, asset and file standards, engine integrations, and developer tooling.
Reporting to the Head of Developer Platform, you will work closely with product partners and studios to translate platform strategy into robust, scalable, and reusable services that help teams build high-quality, interoperable, and safe LEGO digital experiences.
Key Responsibilities
Partner with the Head of Developer Platform, product, and studio teams to understand developer and studio needs and correlate them to the broader roadmap.
Lead the technical architecture and hands-on implementation of the Developer Platform across SDKs, APIs, validation services, developer tooling, and reference game engine integrations.
Design, build, and operate the core platform services that support asset libraries, rules and validation, certification workflows, and other reusable developer capabilities.
Define and evolve standards for assets, metadata, versioning, compatibility, and interoperability.
Establish and uphold strong engineering practices across code quality, testing, CI/CD, observability, reliability, security, and release management for business-critical platform services.
Make and communicate key technical decisions, review critical designs and code, and mentor engineers to strengthen technical judgment and delivery quality across the team.
Work closely with engines, tools, and game teams to ensure the platform integrates cleanly into target environments and supports a high-quality developer experience.
Embed governance by design by ensuring platform capabilities are secure, compliant, and aligned with brand, safety, and policy requirements for LEGO digital experiences.
Experience & Qualifications
Bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, STEM field, or equivalent practical experience.
Systems Architecture expertise across APIs, SDKs, data formats, asset pipelines, runtime services, and developer workflows for game, creator, or comparable technical ecosystems.
Significant hands-on experience designing distributed systems, service architectures, data models, and developer-facing interfaces with a strong focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
Strong programming skills in multiple programming languages of different levels, as applicable to domains, with the ability to remain deeply hands-on in architecture, implementation, debugging, and code review.
Experience in games and engine integration, such as with Unity or Unreal, or comparable authoring tools, runtime environments, or asset pipeline systems.
Experience building backend services and developer tooling in cloud-based environments, including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, release management, and secure service operations.
Experience defining and evolving technical standards such as schemas, versioned APIs, file and data formats, reusable abstractions, and how they relate to Developer Experience.
Strong understanding of governance across security, privacy, trust and safety, IP and brand controls, and child-safe or regulated digital environments.
Experience providing team technical leadership, including mentoring engineers, driving quality bars, reviewing design, and influencing technical direction across stakeholders.
Experience working closely with internal studios, product teams, and cross-functional partners, with strong communication and influencing skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
Nice to have
Experience building platform capabilities and compliance services, including rules engines, validation systems, certification workflows, or policy-driven service design.
Experience with 3D asset pipelines, semantic content systems, procedural generation, CAD-to-runtime conversion, or hybrid physical-digital workflows.
Experience with provenance, attribution, identity, permissions, or entitlement systems in creator or UGC ecosystems.
Experience building platform capabilities for internal or external developers, including reference implementations, technical documentation, and developer support models.
Experience building brand-safe or regulated consumer ecosystems, including moderation, partner governance, and strong trust, safety, and security requirements.
