Part Time French Teacher (between 0.6 to 0.8 FTE)
St John’s, Northwood is seeking to appoint a passionate and inspiring French Teacher to join our Prep School. This is a permanent part time role (between 0.6 to 0.8 FTE), commencing September 2026. Optimal working patterns, potentially split across 3, 4, or 5 days will be established with the successful candidate. Applicants with either independent or maintained sector backgrounds are welcomed.
The Role
We are seeking a passionate and inspiring French Teacher to join our Prep School, taking responsibility for the subject across all year groups from 3-6. The successful candidate will teach pupils in small classes, lead curriculum planning, assessment, and monitoring, and promote a love of the French language and culture. You will also contribute to co-curricular activities, clubs, cultural events, trips, and potentially residential visits.
The successful candidate will have a recognised teaching qualification, strong French subject knowledge, and the ability to inspire pupils and support colleagues. A commitment to high standards, safeguarding, and pastoral care is essential.
Key responsibilities
To lead and develop French across the School, ensuring high-quality teaching, effective curriculum provision, continuity of learning and strong pupil outcomes.
To oversee curriculum development, assessment and tracking, staff support, and contribute to the School’s academic strategy.
To promote a love of the French language and culture across the School, through lessons, enrichment activities, clubs, and events.
Core Objectives
1. Teaching and promoting French
Promote high standards, enthusiasm, and academic ambition in French language learning.
Set regular homework or learning tasks, appropriate to an academically ambitious school, and to the needs of individual learners.
Contribute to whole-school academic planning, evaluation, and strategy for Modern Foreign Languages.
2. Curriculum Development
Oversee a broad, balanced and progressive French curriculum from Year 3-8.
Ensure continuity and progression of skills and cultural knowledge.
Prepare pupils effectively for entrance and scholarship examinations where appropriate.
Develop schemes of work, resources, and assessment tools that inspire pupils and are fun.
3. Teaching and Learning
Plan and deliver high-quality lessons that cater for a range of abilities and learning styles.
Monitor pupil progress and provide constructive feedback.
Oversee assessment, tracking, and data analysis within French.
4. Operational and Administrative Duties
Manage departmental resources, including books, digital tools, and multimedia.
Contribute to clubs, trips, and cultural events as required.
Ensure health and safety procedures and risk assessments are followed.
Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, and external partners.
Contribute to the pastoral care and support children’s wellbeing, as required.
The person
This is an exciting opportunity for a well-qualified and committed teacher, passionate about French. The successful candidate will have strong personal organisation skills and be committed and pro-active. They will be enthusiastic, confident and positive.
Experience of teaching across a range of Prep School year groups. Effective written and verbal communication skills are also required.
The ability to interact and support children in a positive way to foster their enthusiasm for learning, and to have the skills and maturity required to take on the teaching duties and responsibilities is key.

The School
St John’s is an independent boys’ Pre-Prep and Preparatory School for pupils aged three to thirteen years, with approximately 300 boys on roll. Founded in 1920, the school is owned by the Merchant Taylors’ Educational Trust and is situated on a beautiful 35-acre site in Northwood, Middlesex, offering an exceptional environment for teaching and learning.As a school, we are committed to the development of the whole child—intellectually, morally, socially, and physically.
Remuneration
St John’s, Northwood has its own salary scale, which is above the Central London Maintained Scale. The salary offered will be commensurate with experience and qualifications between £35,578 – £54,839 per annum. The role will be between 0.6 to 0.8 FTE.
Lunch, parking and a generous pension package are also offered as part of the package.
