Clinical Practice Facilitator - Emergency Department
Job overview
The post holder’s role within the Education Team will combine staff development and practice facilitation within ED with clinical leadership with the support and guidance of the Practice Development Nurses. They will support, upskill and develop the Nursing and Health Care team in delivering high standards of patient focussed and evidence-based care.
Alongside this, they will be providing education and training to staff to ensure high standards are maintained as well as professional growth and competence.
Main duties of the job
- Demonstrate a high level of knowledge, skill, and understanding of clinical practice within the Emergency Department, acting as a resource and role model to a wide range of colleagues.
- Act as a resource for clinical staff regarding defined clinical topics, providing evidence-based advice and guidance as required.
- Promote a holistic approach to care that is current, effective, and research-based, in accordance with Trust policies and procedures, and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
- Ensure that NMC and Trust standards for learning, development, and assessment are implemented and embedded into nursing practice.
- Work alongside clinical staff, providing support, coaching, role modelling, and education. While supporting and educating staff, the post holder will continue to maintain high standards of patient care, ensuring patient safety at all times.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge base, ensuring personal academic credibility.
- Ensure that personal clinical practice reflects current knowledge and best practice.
- Engage in the development of clinical nursing practices and take responsibility for monitoring and evaluating clinical activity in conjunction with other senior staff.
- Coordinate the delivery of practice-based education and continuing professional development for staff at all levels, including induction, preceptorship, and assessment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- To work in accordance with the NMC Code (2018), and Trust Policies and Procedures.
- To ensure that own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge and latest evidence based practice.
- To work clinically in all allocated wards and departments, working in accordance with an identified urgent need, supporting individual Nurses, TNAs, NAs and HCAs in developing their practice, and in response to specific issues raised at care group risk and governance level, including learning from serious incidents.
- Support the department to meet the requirements set out in CQC standards, professional validation and audits.
- Intervene in any poor practice observed, ensure patient safety and report to fellow CPFs, Practice Development Nurses/ ED Nurse in Charge as required.
- To produce written accounts of each episode of clinical facilitation, documenting learning achieved and areas for further development.
- To demonstrate specialist nursing knowledge in clinical settings and support the advancement of knowledge and skills using approved assessment procedures.
· To work effectively as part of the multi-professional, inter-disciplinary team, encouraging and supporting other health care professionals in the promotion and maintenance of an effective learning environment.
- To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role model for nurses and other staff.
- To maintain effective working relations with colleagues at all levels and from all professions within the care group, ensuring effective communication at all times.
- To maintain accurate records of training undertaken by each member of staff.
To work with the other ED CPF team members to ensure support is provided fairly to all members of ED Nursing staff, bearing in mind the strategic needs of the ED as a whole.
Education and Training
- To facilitate the learning and continuing development of all nursing staff within the department, ensuring that education is responsive to service developments.
- To advise in relation educational opportunities and assist nurses in developing themselves in accordance with their personal development plan and/or appraisal objectives.
- To support nursing, NA and HCA staff in developing clinical competency around specified skills.
- To create, sustain and support an environment where practice development and change can flourish.
- To support practice supervisors, assessors and preceptors in their role, ensuring that learning opportunities are effectively utilised.
- To promote research awareness by, disseminating appropriate evidence-based and research findings relevant to the clinical practice area.
Management
- To manage own time to ensure a balance between clinical and administrative activities. This should be split roughly 80% clinical and 20% administration.
- To facilitate the process of ensuring multi-disciplinary training to meet specific initiatives.
- To support the Practice Development Nurses in ensuring all nursing staff receive a comprehensive and individualised induction and orientation package on commencement of post.
- To ensure compliance with the Trust's Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trusts Race Equality Scheme and the Trust's duty to positively promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people ensuring services are responsive to the needs of equality groups
Personal Professional Development
- To actively participate in maintaining own professional development, identifying own educational and clinical training needs with Line Manager.
- To ensure own mandatory training certificates are current.
- To maintain your own personal and professional development attending mandatory study sessions as required.
- To identify an area of work within ED to deliver an improvement project on during your time as CPF.
- To participate in reflective practice and maintain a personal learning portfolio as per NMC revalidation requirements.
- To keep up to date with NMC, relevant specialist, Faculty & Trust guidelines and protocols.
People Management and Performance
- Lead and coach the performance of the team in line with good people management practices. Ensuring excellence is recognised and underperformance is addressed.
- Ensure the Nurses, HCAs and NAs are compliant with all statutory, mandatory training together with any professional training requirements, ensuring they are up to date and fully compliant.
- Ensure overall wellbeing of the team is maintained. Continuously support in improving the morale of the team and implementing a culture of zero-tolerance for bullying and harassment.
General
- The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

- A clinical expert either through formal qualification (degree) and/or extensive clinical experience pertinent to Emergency Care.
