Deputy Head of Compliance – Permanent – Banking

Venn Group have partnered with a banking institution in London seeking to recruit a Deputy Head of Compliance to join them on a permanent basis.

The role-holder will play a critical leadership role in ensuring the Bank’s ongoing adherence to all applicable regulatory requirements, with a particular focus on FCA framework adherence, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Sanctions, and Conduct-related Risks.

The role will also support the Head of Compliance in building and maintaining robust compliance systems, and deputise in their absence, ensuring effective oversight and execution of the compliance function.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Leadership Support
    • Act as Deputy to the Head of Compliance, providing cover and strategic input as required.
    • Support in leading the Compliance team and delivering departmental objectives.
  • Regulatory Oversight
    • Ensure adherence to the FCA’s Senior Management and Certification Regime (SMCR) .
    • Maintain the Bank’s compliance with regulatory frameworks across UK and wider international jurisdictions.
    • Provide interpretation and guidance on regulatory developments, assessing impact and ensuring timely implementation.
  • Monitoring and Controls
    • Oversee non-AML regulatory compliance areas and contribute to the design and implementation of robust systems and controls.
    • Review and approve periodic compliance reviews of customers.
    • Ensure customer related reviews are completed on schedule.
    • Review and monitor dissemination and implementation of HMT sanction notices , ensuring compliance by relevant teams (e.g., CSD).
    • Oversee daily sanctions screening for payments, ensuring timely review and sign-off.
  • Advisory and Governance
    • Provide ongoing advice to senior management and business units on regulatory, reputational, and conduct risks.
    • Contribute to compliance policies, procedures, and risk assessments.
    • Liaise with internal stakeholders to promote a culture of compliance and ethical business conduct.
  • Regulatory Engagement
    • Assist in preparation for regulatory inspections, including those by the FCA and PRA , as well as internal and external audits.
    • Support in responding to regulatory queries and ensuring appropriate documentation and follow-up.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Significant experience in a senior compliance role within the banking or financial services sector.
  • Strong knowledge of UK regulatory environment , particularly FCA and PRA rules.
  • Experience dealing with cross-jurisdictional regulations (multiple international jurisdictions preferred).
  • In-depth understanding of AML, sanctions, conduct risk, and regulatory controls.
  • Experience managing or deputising in compliance leadership roles.

  • Excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to interpret complex regulatory texts and translate them into practical guidance.
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal.
