The school has invested heavily in early intervention strategies, pastoral systems, and SEND support. With an increasing number of pupils requiring additional support across Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1, the school is now seeking an experienced Behaviour Mentor to join its dedicated pastoral team.

Role Purpose

The Behaviour Mentor will provide specialist support to pupils who face challenges with behaviour, emotional regulation, social interaction, or engagement in learning. Many pupils may have SEMH needs, ASD, ADHD, attachment difficulties, or developmental delays affecting social and emotional skills.

You will be a consistent, calm, and trusted adult, working directly with children in classrooms, during small group interventions, and at unstructured times such as play and lunch. The role focuses on helping pupils build self-confidence, resilience, and social skills, while supporting teachers and parents to maintain a consistent approach to behaviour management.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver 1:1 behavioural and emotional mentoring for pupils with additional needs

• Facilitate small group interventions focused on emotional literacy, social skills, and self-regulation

• Support children within Nursery and classroom settings across Reception and Key Stage 1

• Assist with transitions, daily routines, and changes in the school day

• Support behaviour management during playtimes, lunchtimes, and other unstructured periods

• Implement individual behaviour support plans and monitor progress

• Use restorative, play-based, and trauma-informed approaches

• Model positive behaviour and emotional regulation strategies

• Observe, assess, and track pupil progress, behaviours, and responses to interventions

• Maintain accurate records and contribute to planning and review meetings

• Build professional, supportive relationships with parents and carers

• Collaborate with SENCO, pastoral staff, teachers, and external agencies as needed

• Support safeguarding and child protection procedures consistently

• Promote a school culture of empathy, inclusion, and mutual respect

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be compassionate, resilient, and highly skilled in supporting young children with complex behavioural and emotional needs. You will have a deep understanding that challenging behaviour is often a form of communication, and you will respond with patience, consistency, and a positive, solution-focused approach.

You should demonstrate:

• Experience working in a Primary, Nursery, or EYFS environment

• Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, attachment difficulties, ASD, and trauma-informed practice

• Confidence delivering behaviour interventions and tracking outcomes effectively

• Strong interpersonal, communication, and team-working skills

• Emotional resilience and reflective practice

• Proactive attitude and flexibility in a dynamic school environment

Qualifications in childcare, education, psychology, or youth work are desirable but not essential.
