The Role:
The Art Technician will support the day-to-day running of the art department by preparing resources, maintaining equipment, organising materials and ensuring studios are ready for teaching. You will assist with setting up lessons, helping teachers with demonstrations, ensuring tools and materials are available, and preparing paints, clay, media, paper, boards and equipment in advance of practical sessions.
A key part of the role involves maintaining stock, ordering materials, monitoring budgets for consumables and ensuring safe storage of art supplies. You will help implement health and safety procedures across the department, including checking equipment, ensuring safe usage of tools, managing specialist materials and supporting students with safe working practices. You will also help maintain the school’s kiln, manage firing schedules and assist with ceramics resources.
You will support teachers with GCSE and A-Level coursework preparation, helping organise sketchbooks, digital portfolios, and display work. The role also includes regular rotation of displays around the school, supporting exhibitions, preparing boards and assisting with the curation of student artwork for open evenings and events.
Requirements:
• Strong practical art skills across a range of media
• Experience working in a school art department (preferred but not essential)
• Excellent organisation and resource management
• Ability to support teachers and students in practical activities
• Understanding of health and safety procedures, including safe handling of tools and equipment
• Ability to manage stock, order materials and maintain specialist equipment
• Positive, proactive and collaborative approach
