Head of Communications

The role

The Head of Communications provides strategic direction and leadership for PPL’s communications, marketing and brand, helping us to grow our influence and impact, support business development and strengthen relationships with our people, clients and wider stakeholders.

The role leads the development and delivery of compelling, integrated internal and external communications that respond to the changing environment while remaining focused on PPL’s organisational priorities.

The postholder will contribute to organisational leadership and strategic planning, working closely with the joint CEOs, Senior Leadership Team, Practice Leads and other senior colleagues to support the delivery of PPL’s business plan.

What you’ll do

  • Shape and lead an integrated communications and marketing strategy that supports PPL’s business plan and growth ambitions.

  • Act as a trusted adviser to the joint CEOs, Senior Leadership Team and Practice Leads, contributing to organisation-wide decision-making and attending SLT meetings.

  • Translate organisational and Practice priorities into focused communications, engagement and influencing plans, while maintaining a coherent overall PPL story.

  • Lead the planning and delivery of high-quality, multi-channel campaigns, content and events.

  • Strengthen and protect PPL’s brand, reputation and distinctive voice across all internal and external communications.

  • Ensure internal communications support employee engagement, organisational alignment and change.

  • Use performance data, market intelligence and external insight to improve impact, anticipate opportunities and inform decision-making.

  • Lead and develop PPL’s Communications Manager and manage external agencies, suppliers and communications budgets effectively.

You’ll bring:

  • Significant experience of shaping and delivering integrated internal and external communications at a strategic level.

  • The credibility and judgement to advise Chief Executives and senior leaders, constructively influencing decisions and priorities.

  • An excellent ability to turn complex ideas, policy and strategy into clear, compelling communications for different audiences.

  • Strong leadership and delivery skills, with experience of managing people, projects, campaigns, budgets and external partners in a fast-moving environment.

  • Broad communications expertise spanning digital channels, content, events, stakeholder engagement and media relations.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, combined with a collaborative approach and commitment to producing high-quality work.

Experience of public affairs, policy influencing or crisis communications - particularly in health, local government, social care or the voluntary sector - would be useful, but is not essential.
