Head of Alternatives Operations, Valuation Oversight
If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfil your potential - whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or an exciting new direction, we offer opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.
We’re one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with a network that covers more than 50 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.
We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Head of Alternatives Operations, Valuation Oversight. HSBC Alternatives is the alternative investment arm of HSBC Asset Management, investing globally across private market funds, hedge funds, real assets, infrastructure, private debt and venture capital. This role will lead a newly created global Valuation Oversight pillar within Alternatives Operations—independent from investment teams and local operations—to strengthen valuation governance, modelling oversight and control standards for complex and illiquid assets in an environment of increasing regulatory scrutiny and evolving market expectations.
As an HSBC employee in the UK, you’ll have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.
In this role you’ll:
- Establish and lead a new Global Valuation Oversight function spanning all Alternatives capabilities and regions, with clear scope, governance and resourcing aligned to global time zones.
- Own the end-to-end valuation governance and control framework, defining roles/accountabilities across the valuation lifecycle (including independent challenge), committees, escalation routes, thresholds and exception handling.
- Enhance and harmonise valuation policy, methodology and process standards for complex/illiquid instruments (e.g., Private Equity, Private Credit, Real Assets), ensuring robust documentation and audit/regulatory defensibility.
- Provide independent oversight and credible challenge of valuation models, key inputs and third parties (administrators, external valuers, pricing sources), including thematic deep dives into higher-risk areas.
- Build and maintain MI/KRIs and issue management: define risk indicators, track exceptions/overrides, lead remediation of control gaps and report to senior management and governance forums.
- Drive technology enablement for valuation oversight (workflow, controls attestation, exception management, audit trail and MI), partnering with Technology to leverage automation/AI where appropriate.
To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:
- Proven track record in valuation oversight, valuation governance, fund/product controllership, investment operations, or a closely related control function within alternatives/private markets.
- Strong technical understanding of valuing complex and illiquid assets across Private Markets (e.g., Private Equity, Private Credit, Real Assets/Infrastructure), including models, assumptions, input hierarchies and limitations.
- Demonstrated ability to design and embed global control frameworks in regulated environments.
- Track record of leading cross-regional stakeholder management across Investment, Risk, Compliance, Finance and Audit—able to influence while maintaining independence and constructive challenge.
- Experience with third-party oversight (fund administrators, pricing vendors, external valuers, AIFMs, auditors) and producing evidence trails suitable for audits and regulatory review.
- Change leadership capability, including target operating model design and systems/process implementation; comfort leveraging data, workflow tooling and automation/AI to improve control effectiveness.
