Medical Technical Officer - Histology

We have an opportunity for an Medical Technical Officer to join their team of staff in the Histology department. This is a full time role for 37.5 hours a week. The role holder will be required to cover a flexible shift pattern. Purelab-UK is seeking a motivated and reliable Medical Technical Officer (MTO) to join our Histology laboratory team. The successful candidate will support the delivery of high-quality diagnostic Histology services and will participate in extended working shifts, weekend working, and Bank Holiday rotas. Duties of this role include:
- Undertake a defined range of technical laboratory procedures under the direction and appropriate supervision of Biomedical Scientists and in accordance with your demonstrated competencies.
- Undertake technical activities associated with the preparation and processing of tissue and cytology specimens where appropriately trained and competent.
- Support the receipt, identification, preparation and processing of patient specimens in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Ensure specimens are appropriately labelled, matched to accompanying information and prepared for the correct laboratory pathway
- Contribute to a strong culture of quality and patient safety throughout PureLab-UK.
- Operate laboratory equipment and instrumentation for which you have been appropriately trained and assessed as competent.
- Ensure appropriate stocks of laboratory reagents, consumables and other materials are available to support uninterrupted service delivery.
- Archive tissue specimens, blocks, slides and other laboratory materials accurately and in accordance with departmental procedures and retention requirements.
- Use the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and other relevant laboratory systems in accordance with authorised procedures.
- Participate fully in laboratory training, competency and development programmes.
- Work collaboratively with Biomedical Scientists, Senior Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants, Pathologists, managers and other colleagues to provide a responsive laboratory service.
- Relevant laboratory experience within a diagnostic, healthcare, scientific or similarly regulated environment, or demonstrable technical laboratory knowledge appropriate to the role.
- Appropriate science-based qualification, such as an NVQ Level 3, BTEC, A Level, laboratory science qualification or equivalent relevant experience.
- Demonstrable experience or aptitude in performing practical laboratory techniques requiring accuracy, precision and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow detailed Standard Operating Procedures and work consistently within defined protocols.
- Good understanding of the importance of specimen identification, traceability and accurate record keeping.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain concentration when undertaking repetitive or technically demanding tasks.
- Good numeracy and literacy skills, including the ability to undertake calculations required for reagent and solution preparation.
- Ability to use laboratory IT systems or other computerised systems accurately and confidently.
- Good organisational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands.
- Minimum 2 years' experience working within a Histology laboratory.
- Good practical experience in:
- Specimen receipt and accessioning.
- Tissue processing.
- Tissue embedding.
- Slide preparation.
- Routine histological staining.
- Immunohistochemistry (IHC) support processes.
- Coverslipping and slide distribution.
- Equipment maintenance and cleaning
