Technical Tutor - Garment Construction & Fashion Technologies

RAVENSBOURNE UNIVERSITY LONDON
London
We are looking for a dynamic and highly skilled fashion Technical Tutor to join our Fashion Atelier team in a diverse role that balances excellent hands-on technical tuition with the running of an outstanding fashion production workshop.

The Role

The technical tutor position is a dual role, in which the post holder splits their time between providing excellent technical tuition and support in their technical area, while contributing to its day-to-day running.

As a technical tutor in garment construction and fashion technologies, the post holder has excellent core capability in garment construction, while also being driven to embed fashion technologies and surface embellishment processes into their day-to-day role, for example: pattern development/production technologies, digital embroidery, textile printing, etc. (with training and support where needed).

Technical tuition can take a variety of forms such as technical classes, workshops, skills training sessions and 1-2-1 tuition. Although not responsible for the curriculum, the post holder will draw on their expertise to collaborate with the relevant academic team on it.

The post holder will also take ownership of their technical space to ensure that it is equipped and maintained to a high standard and will strive to provide technical facilities and resources that are functional, accessible and well presented.

They will be responsible for the safe operation and supervision of technical resources and spaces and will deliver health and safety inductions, ensuring health and safety compliance and that best working practices are at the core of their technical area.

We Offer

  • Generous leave
  • Competitive Pension Scheme
  • An Employee Assistance programme
  • A cycle-to-work scheme
With extensive experience in garment construction, and a strong motivation to embed fashion technologies into your day-to-day, you will be just as comfortable demonstrating advanced denim and tailoring construction techniques to a room full of students as you are troubleshooting a large-format digital textile printer or pattern plotter-cutter. You should be excited and motivated to pick up complimentary skills and processes as our facilities and curriculum evolve.

Passing on strong and current garment construction and fashion technologies skills to your students is a key aspect of what you do. You’ll also be driven to support the success of your students, the course, and the university as a whole in dynamic ways – including directly sewing garments and prototypes for exhibitions, competitions and marketing campaigns and collaborating with industry partners as part of our learning with industry strategy.

You take pride in all aspects of your work and bring a strong sense of professionalism and healthy perfectionism to your role. This extends to the Atelier itself, where you will take ownership of its organisation, presentation and safety, ensuring it is a space that reflects the standards of the course and inspires the students who work in it. You genuinely value being meticulously organised and you prioritise safety – an example you are determined to set for your students to help elevate them even further.

If you are excited to blend traditional garment construction teaching with a diverse range of fashion technologies and be a key contributor to a dynamic, technology-forward institution, we would love to hear from you.

Application & Interview Requirements

Experience within a higher education environment and a track record of applying innovative approaches to teaching and learning would be advantageous. However, if your experience is within industry or studio/atelier coordination including directing assistants and interns, and you believe your skills are transferable, we encourage you to apply.

Interviews will consist of an initial Q&A interview with a panel, where you will also be asked to give a short presentation showing some work examples that demonstrate your technical ability and experience. Following this, there will be a technical assessment lasting up to one hour, in which you will be asked to sew a sleeve gauntlet from pre-cut pieces while explaining (as if to students) what you are doing. The entire interview process should last no more than 2.5 hours in total.

While we consider all applications, if you feel it would strengthen your application then you are welcome to attach a portfolio showing some key work and/or teaching case studies.
