Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Nursing
Job Summary
The post will be held by an academic with a sustained track record within nursing who is able to contribute to learning and teaching, research, knowledge transfer and professional practice, to the benefit of students, the School, the University and the wider community, and to conduct duties such as Course Director, citizenship activities associated with recruitment, internationalisation and student experience. The appointee would be expected:- To carry out all core activities in three areas: learning and teaching; research, knowledge transfer and professional impact; and administration, management, leadership and citizenship; and
- To deliver significant higher-level achievements in at least two of these areas, demonstrating national impact in their discipline and possibly international impact in some areas.
Main Activities And Responsibilities:
Core activities - Learning and teaching- Prepare innovative educational materials to deliver high quality teaching as evidenced by strong module feedback and high student success on taught modules, as appropriate, in the subject area.
- Undertake module co-ordination/leadership, as appropriate, including contributing to the development of specified, high quality modules/courses which meet students’ needs as specified by the Head of Department.
- Prepare, invigilate, mark and moderate assessments, in accordance with University policies and procedures, providing provide timely and effective feedback to students.
- Contribute to the practice based learning of students, fieldtrips, residentials and other student activities as required from time to time.
- Provide personal tutoring to individual students in accordance with University policies and procedures as required from time to time.
- Remain abreast of the developments in the relevant academic discipline;
- Actively support School/University activities that promote or develop research, KT and professional practice.
- Support for the core business of the School, including participation in the processes for the recruitment, selection, enrolment, and induction of students, attendance at University recruitment events visits to partner schools and other marketing initiatives, improving the student experience and contributing to the research environment;
- Administrative duties required for the smooth running of the School, including monitoring attendance, maintaining assessment records and carrying out module evaluations, in accordance with the regulations of the time.
- Attendance and participation meetings related to the subject area delivery and development, including Course Boards. Examination Boards and other Departmental, School and University meetings.
- External engagement as appropriate (with the professional discipline, local community, schools and colleges, employers, international partners)
- Mentorship of colleagues
- Demonstrate positive attitude, actions and commitment across all areas of activity including EDI
- Produce materials that are used at other institutions
- Publish textbooks
- Publish in educational journals and other academic media
- Contribute to conferences through lectures or poster presentations

- Achievements in a significant number of the following areas, at a level consistent with national impact in the appointee’s discipline:
- Publications (journals, books, chapters that are nationally leading/excellent)
- Other high quality research outputs (e.g. exhibitions, compositions, direction/production of performances etc)
- Research grants as principal investigator
- PhD supervision
- Research presentations at symposia and conferences
- PhD External Examinership (PhD)
- Higher level activity examples – knowledge transfer
- Winning external funding for applied research with industry
- Winning educational funding (e.g. partnerships and collaborations)
- Coordinating and/or delivering CPD
- Developing patents and spin out companies
- Developing research to provide impact in society or in the economy
- Fellowship (or equivalent) of professional bodies
- Engagement with professional decision-making bodies
- Leading successful bids for commissioning of professional education, or contributing to major commissions
- Managing higher level CPD in the discipline
- Holding editorial positions (including Journal Editorial Boards)
- Conference organisation (e.g. national conference/programme chairs and programme committee
- Demonstration of successful management and leadership within the School
- Contribution to University committees or panels
- Work with charities/NGOs with national impact
Selection Criteria:
Apart from where specified, candidates are expected to meet most of the following PS criteria: Qualifications- A good honours degree in a relevant subject with an appropriate subject specialism and a postgraduate qualification or relevant professional experience (essential).
- A PhD in an appropriate or closely related discipline (desirable) Registration on the NMC Professional Register (essential) Hold an appropriate NMC recordable teaching qualification (essential) Be a HEA fellow or Senior Fellow (desirable
- Evidence of ability to meet the teaching needs of the School at degree level, and at postgraduate level (essential). Evidence of undertaking PhD supervision in the subject area (desirable). Substantial post registration experience as an adult nurse (essential)
- Contemporary working knowledge of UK health care policy, particularly in relation to adult nursing care (essential)

Training And Development Staff appointed without a teaching qualification or at least two years’ teaching experience in further or higher education are allocated a place on the University’s teaching staff induction programme which can lead to a post-graduate qualification. Duties And Hours Of Work The nature of this post is such that the post-holder is expected to work such hours as are reasonably necessary in order to fulfil your duties and responsibilities. For full-time posts, formal scheduled teaching responsibilities should not exceed 18 hours in any week or a total of 550 in the teaching year. Teaching Year The teaching year will not normally exceed 38 weeks, of which 2 weeks will be spent on teaching-related administration. While some flexibility may be required in organising the teaching year, the post-holder would not (except with prior agreement) be required to undertake more than 14 consecutive weeks of teaching at any one time. Holidays The University’s academic holiday year runs from 1 October to 30 September. Annual leave entitlement for a part time post is 35 days ( Pro rata), in addition to statutory Bank Holidays and discretionary holidays. Pension The University offers automatic membership of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS). The TPS is a contributory defined benefit ‘final salary' scheme and provides a lump sum and regular income after retirement.
