We are seeking a passionate and skilled Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Teaching Assistant to join our vibrant and nurturing primary school in North London . The successful candidate will work alongside the EYFS teachers to deliver engaging and inclusive learning experiences , ensuring that each child receives the individual attention and support needed to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Role Overview

The EYFS Teaching Assistant will provide classroom and one-to-one support for children in the EYFS setting. You will assist with lesson delivery, learning activities, behaviour management, and pastoral care . You will also contribute to observations, assessments, and planning to ensure that all children achieve their developmental goals.

This role is ideal for a professional who enjoys working with young children, fostering creativity, and supporting early learning in a nurturing and structured environment .

Key Responsibilities

  1. Supporting Learning and Development:

    • Assist teachers in planning and delivering EYFS curriculum activities , including literacy, numeracy, expressive arts, and physical development.

    • Work with individual children or small groups to support learning and skill development .

    • Encourage children to explore, experiment, and engage in creative and sensory play .

  2. Observations and Assessments:

    • Observe and document children’s progress and behaviour, supporting the EYFS statutory framework and assessment requirements.

    • Contribute to Development Matters profiles , reporting on milestones, achievements, and areas requiring support.

    • Identify children who may need additional intervention or SEN support , reporting to the teacher or SENCO.

  3. Behaviour and Pastoral Support:

    • Support children in developing social and emotional skills , including sharing, turn-taking, and conflict resolution.

    • Use positive behaviour management strategies to encourage cooperation and respect.

    • Assist children in regulating emotions , providing reassurance and guidance during challenging moments.

  4. Classroom Organisation and Environment:

    • Prepare and maintain learning materials, resources, and classroom displays .

    • Ensure the classroom is safe, clean, and stimulating for all children.

    • Set up and manage outdoor learning areas and play equipment , fostering exploration and physical development.

  5. Communication and Collaboration:

    • Build positive relationships with children, parents, and colleagues , promoting effective communication and partnership.

    • Work closely with the EYFS team to plan activities, review progress, and implement learning strategies .

    • Liaise with external professionals, including speech and language therapists, early years specialists, and educational psychologists where required.

  6. Safeguarding and Welfare:

    • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children , adhering to school safeguarding policies and procedures.

    • Recognise and report any concerns regarding child welfare promptly.

    • Provide first aid and support with minor injuries as necessary, following training and school guidelines.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working with children aged 3–5 years in a nursery, preschool, or EYFS classroom.

  • Be confident delivering early years curriculum activities and supporting play-based learning.

  • Have a good understanding of child development, safeguarding, and early intervention strategies .

  • Demonstrate patience, empathy, creativity, and resilience when working with young children.

  • Possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills .

  • Hold or be willing to obtain relevant qualifications , such as Level 2 or 3 Early Years, CACHE, or NVQ in Childcare.

  • Be proactive, flexible, and committed to teamwork and continuous professional development .
