Location: Hackney, East/Inner London
School Type: Secondary School & Sixth Form (Co-educational)
Contract: Full-Time, Permanent or Fixed-Term

Set in one of London’s most vibrant and creative boroughs, this mid-year appointment offers an exciting opportunity for an energetic English specialist, whether an experienced teacher seeking a fresh challenge or a talented Early Career Teacher (ECT), to inspire critical literacy, textual analysis, and articulate self-expression across a high-aspiring, diverse student body.
About the Role
Stepping into the department for the January term, you will reinvigorate student engagement across classical, modern, and post-colonial literature, poetry, and linguistic study. Joining a supportive, highly collaborative team, you will deliver high-rigor, text-rich lessons across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE English Language & English Literature), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level English Literature / Language / Media Studies), sharpening students' analytical writing, oral debate, and critical reasoning as they head toward spring assessments and summer examinations.

Prepare GCSE and A-Level cohorts effectively for summer written examinations through explicit modeling of analytical essays, timed assessment practice, and data-driven targeted revision strategies.
Cultivate a vibrant, discussion-led classroom atmosphere where critical debate, diverse cultural perspectives, and deep textual exploration are actively championed.
Monitor, track, and evaluate student progress systematically, implementing tailored interventions to stretch high-achieving literary scholars while scaffolding core literacy skills for developing writers.
Contribute enthusiastically to departmental enrichment, including creative writing workshops, debater societies, shadow judging for national book awards, and theater outings.
Requirements
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognized teaching qualification.
A strong academic degree in English Literature, English Language, Linguistics, Creative Writing, or a closely related discipline.
Proven track record or demonstrated capability of delivering outstanding English teaching across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (A-Level/KS5 English teaching capability is highly desirable).
In-depth understanding of national English examination specifications (e.g., AQA, Edexcel, OCR) and evidence-based literacy instruction practices.
Excellent classroom presence, compelling communication skills, and an infectious passion for literature and the transformative power of language.
Salary & Benefits
Pay Scale: Inner London Main / Upper Pay Scale (MPS/UPS Inner London, commensurate with experience), with potential TLR opportunities available for Key Stage English Coordination, Literacy Lead, or KS5 English Lead.
Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD), structured middle leadership mentoring, and access to staff health and wellbeing schemes.
