Intern Software Engineer (3 or 6 months)

Overview of the role

This opportunity would suit a student from an Engineering or Computing discipline and, in particular, we are looking for students who have an interest in working with real-time embedded software.

You will be in a hands-on software development role with experienced engineers providing mentoring and support.

Working as part of a team, you will work across a product portfolio that encompasses cutting edge Land, Sea and Air products, involved in many aspects of software development across the software lifecycle. Our products increasingly utilise Image Processing, AI and Data Analytics to keep Thales at the forefront of technology via diverse platforms such as System on Chip, Microcontrollers, Single Board Computers, through to HCI consoles. There exists opportunities across this spectrum from low level near hardware development to behavioural application and user interface layers.

This role is onsite, based at our Glasgow facility, for a period of 3 or 6 months, depending on your course structure.

Key attributes required

  • A demonstrable desire to work in embedded software
  • Enjoy designing, developing and testing software solutions and components
  • Have some knowledge of programming languages and frameworks (e.g. C, C++)
  • Have a basic understanding of embedded systems/hardware
  • Organised and able to communicate clearly

Responsibilities

You will:

  • Further develop your programming skills in C++
  • Gain hands on experience of embedded software development, debug and test, typically on PIC32 microcontroller platform
  • Further develop your understanding of hardware capabilities (I/O, comms, timers, D/A, A/D, etc)
  • Engage with other experienced engineers to further your own personal development

There is ample opportunity to develop your skills within Thales, developing as an engineer, further progressing to senior technical roles (e.g. Software Architect or Technical Specialist) or project managerial roles (Software Engineering Manager).

Training is provided through a mixture of mentoring, online and in-person courses. Thales actively encourages membership of professional organisations such as the IET, and will pay membership fees and support individuals to work towards Chartered status.

This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.

To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
