SEN Teaching Assistant - Complex Needs & Behaviour Support

Marchant Recruitment
London

Location: White City, London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham
Setting: Mainstream Primary School with Specialist SEN & Behaviour Provision
Contract: Full-Time | Long-Term | Term-Time Only
Start Date: ASAP (Immediate Interviews Available)

The Role

A large, inclusive primary school in White City is seeking a highly resilient, confident, and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with complex additional needs , including autism, SEMH, sensory processing difficulties, and behaviour linked to communication challenges. This is a demanding but highly rewarding role suited to an SEN professional who understands behaviour as communication and is confident supporting pupils who require high levels of consistency, structure, and emotional regulation.

This role is not general classroom support. You will be working closely with pupils who need intensive 1:1 SEN support throughout the school day and who benefit from clear boundaries, predictable routines, and calm adult guidance. Many pupils have EHCPs and display behaviours that can present challenges without the right strategies in place.

The school is committed to inclusion and invests heavily in SEN provision, staffing, and training.

About the School

The school is located in White City , serving a diverse and vibrant community. It has a high proportion of pupils with SEN and a well-established reputation for strong behaviour support and inclusion. The leadership team understands the pressures of SEN work and provides clear systems, guidance, and support for staff working with complex needs.

The SEN provision is structured and well-resourced, with:

  • Clear behaviour and regulation strategies

  • Access to external behaviour support services

  • Strong SENCO leadership

  • A consistent, whole-school approach to inclusion

SEN Teaching Assistants are viewed as skilled professionals and are supported to carry out their roles confidently and safely.

Key Responsibilities

As an SEN Teaching Assistant in this setting, your role will include:

  • Delivering intensive 1:1 SEN support for pupils with autism and SEMH

  • Supporting pupils in line with EHCP outcomes, behaviour plans, and risk assessments

  • Helping pupils regulate emotions and manage challenging behaviour safely

  • Implementing consistent strategies for pupils with sensory processing needs

  • Supporting access to learning through adapted tasks and structured activities

  • Promoting independence while providing appropriate emotional and behavioural support

  • Supporting pupils during transitions, including movement around the school

  • Supervising pupils during breaktimes and lunchtimes where additional support is required

  • Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff

  • Recording observations related to behaviour, progress, and wellbeing

  • Maintaining a calm, professional approach at all times

  • Following safeguarding procedures and ensuring pupil safety

This role requires confidence, emotional resilience, and the ability to remain calm and assertive in challenging situations.

The Ideal Candidate

The school is seeking an SEN Teaching Assistant who:

  • Has strong experience supporting pupils with autism and SEMH

  • Is confident managing challenging behaviour using de-escalation strategies

  • Understands sensory processing difficulties and emotional regulation

  • Can follow behaviour plans consistently and professionally

  • Is calm, patient, and resilient under pressure

  • Builds strong, respectful relationships with pupils

  • Works effectively as part of a wider SEN and pastoral team

  • Is reliable, punctual, and committed to long-term work

Experience in high-SEN or behaviour-focused settings is highly desirable.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience as an SEN Teaching Assistant or similar role

  • Strong understanding of autism, SEMH, and behaviour support

  • Ability to manage challenging behaviour safely and professionally

  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)

  • Availability for full-time, long-term work

What the School Offers

  • A long-term, stable role in a school that values SEN professionals

  • Clear behaviour systems and SEN structures

  • Strong leadership and SENCO support

  • Access to SEN and behaviour-focused training

  • A supportive team environment

  • Competitive pay based on experience

Why This Role Stands Out

This role is ideal for an SEN Teaching Assistant who wants to:

  • Work in a structured, well-supported SEN environment

  • Develop strong experience in behaviour and complex needs support

  • Make a meaningful impact on pupils who need stability and consistency

  • Be part of a school that understands and supports SEN staff
