Mark Allen
London

Editor – British Journal of Nursing (MA Healthcare)

Hybrid (Herne Hill, 3 days in office)

The salary is £40,000-£45,000 (DOE) plus company benefits.

This role is responsible for ensuring the continued quality, authority and impact of the British Journal of Nursing (BJN), our flagship clinical nursing title.

As the Editor of BJN, you will play a central role in shaping and delivering high-quality, evidence-based content that supports nurses’ clinical practice, professional development and leadership. Working in a fast-paced healthcare publishing environment, you will oversee the entire editorial process, collaborate closely with experienced sub-editors, and ensure publication to regular, tight deadlines.

This is a highly independent role for someone who enjoys ownership, thrives on responsibility, and is motivated by producing work that makes a real difference to nursing professionals in the UK and internationally.

About the publication

The BJN is the leading clinical nursing journal written by nurses for nurses from the UK and around the world. Publishing 22 issues per year alongside 19 themed clinical supplements, BJN provides an essential evidence base for practice across specialisms including stoma care, IV and vascular access, tissue viability, oncology, nutrition and urology.

As Editor of BJN, you’ll:

  • Take full responsibility for the end-to-end editorial process across print and digital outputs.

  • Commission high-quality articles from expert authors.

  • Plan and contribute to conference programmes.

  • Organise and manage peer review processes.

  • Develop, sub-edit and proofread manuscripts to a consistently high standard.

  • Source illustrations and photographs.

  • Upload pages to Apogee and Atypon.

  • Liaise closely with editorial boards and a team of sub-editors.

  • Represent the journal at conferences and industry events.

  • Collate author fee lists and manage contributor relationships.

  • Collaborate on wider editorial projects across the business.

  • Ensure all content meets quality, accuracy and deadline requirements.

What we’re looking for

Must-haves:

  • A graduate-level degree or equivalent.

  • At least 3 years’ professional editing experience.

  • Advanced literacy, with the ability to write and edit clear, accurate English.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, including factual and stylistic accuracy.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple workflows and deadlines.

  • Confidence working independently and taking ownership of complex projects.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience in healthcare, clinical or professional publishing.

  • Familiarity with peer review processes.

  • Experience working with editorial boards and external contributors.

  • Interest in nursing, healthcare policy or clinical practice.

If you do not meet every requirement but bring transferable skills, sound judgement and fresh thinking, we encourage you to apply.

Why join Mark Allen Group?

  • Be part of a specialist media business with strong, trusted brands and loyal professional audiences.

  • Join a culture grounded in passion, creativity, fairness and long-term thinking.

  • Upload your application via our careers site.

  • You may include a short video introduction if you wish (optional).

  • References or recommendations can also be shared (optional).
