Job summary
A Locum Consultant position has arisen within the department of Anaesthesia based at Barts Health NHS Trust, with the primary site being the Royal London Hospital. This is a a position for 6 months and provides an excellent opportunity to join an established workforce consisting of over 50 consultant anaesthetists in a major trauma centre based in London.

Main duties of the job
These fixed-term locum consultant posts in anaesthesia based at The Royal London Hospital have arisen due to temporary staff redeployment.The posts are to start in November 2026, and will be for a period of 6 months. The term may be extended by mutual agreement to fulfil ongoing service needs if appropriate.

The successful candidates may be asked to cover surgical lists at Barts or Mile End Hospitals if required. The post holders will be employees of Bart's Health and there may be future opportunities or requirements to work at any of the other hospitals in the Barts Health group. Applicants should have the general knowledge, skills and training appropriate to the role of Consultant in Anaesthesia.

The appointee must be able to work flexibly and be able to cover the range of specialties provided for in the Anaesthesia service at The Royal London Hospital. They should have advanced training or consultant-level experience in at least one of: obstetric anaesthesia, regional & orthopaedic anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, neuroanaesthesia or paediatric anaesthesia, and should be capable of joining an out-of-hours rota as a consultant.Applicants should possess full GMC registration, and either be on the Specialist Register or if in training, be within 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.

Qualifications
Essential

• Full GMC Registration with a 'Licence to Practice'
• MBBS or MBChB or equivalent
• CCT in anaesthesia (or Equivalent) or, if in training, within 6 months of CCT
• FRCA (or equivalent)
• ALS/ATLS/APLS/EPLS provider

Desirable

• Wide experience of UK healthcare system
• Post-CCT/consultant level experience in anaesthesia
• Availability to commence employment at start date of advertised post

Knowledge
Essential

• Advanced anaesthesia training, (SIA or fellowship) or consultant-level experience in one of: obstetric anaesthesia, regional & orthopaedic anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, neuroanaesthesia or paediatric anaesthesia
• Extensive experience in provision of anaesthesia for a wide variety of anaesthesia, especially the management of major trauma
• Proficient in the perioperative care of patients, including acute pain management

• Advanced anaesthesia training, (SIA or fellowship) or consultant-level experience in a second specialist area from the following list: obstetric anaesthesia, regional & orthopaedic anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, neuroanaesthesia or paediatric anaesthesia
