Senior National Project Manager
Heritage is for everybody, and we are here for heritage.
Heritage lives in places and people, memories and stories, artefacts, and traditions. It can connect us all to the past, and to each other. It can make us happier, strengthen every community, and help shape society for the better. Everybody should be able to enjoy the benefits it brings.
That's why, as a charity, we care for over a million objects and hundreds of historic sites in every part of England, from international icons to local treasures. And it's why we open them up, share their stories and find new ways for everybody to enjoy, learn, play, and create.
We are looking for two Senior National Project Managers to join our team. The role is full time and permanent, working 36 hours per week.
Join English Heritage's dynamic Projects and Portfolio Management team, where we bring history to life by delivering ambitious conservation, visitor experience, and information technology projects across England's most iconic heritage sites. As a Senior National Project Manager you'll lead a passionate, multidisciplinary team committed to preserving the nation's story. We don't just manage projects, we shape legacy. From restoring ancient monuments to creating immersive visitor experiences, our work blends strategic vision, expert craftsmanship, and public engagement to ensure England's heritage thrives for future generations.
The Benefits:
- Salary from £55,886, depending on skills, experience and location.
- 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, pro rata, rising to 28 days after 3 years.
- Matched pension contributions up to 10%.
- Flexible hours.
- The opportunity to progress your career within the heritage sector.
- Apprenticeship opportunities.
- Subscriptions to professional bodies.
- Free access to all English Heritage sites for you and up to six friends and family members.
- 25% discount in our shops and cafes.
- Enhanced maternity, paternity, or shared parental leave.
- Options to buy additional leave.
- An inclusive working atmosphere where everybody is supported from all backgrounds, religions, and with different needs.
- Opportunities to go to some of our great live music and history events.
As a Senior National Project Manager, you will play a pivotal leadership role in delivering a diverse portfolio of heritage projects across England. This includes overseeing the organisation's most significant and complex initiatives, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.
As a Senior National Project Manager at English Heritage, you will lead and deliver complex, high impact projects across historic sites, while mentoring project teams and ensuring strategic goals are met with excellence and collaboration. You will also provide line management and mentorship to a team of project managers, supporting their growth and performance.
You will oversee stakeholder engagement, procurement, and risk management to ensure projects run smoothly and deliver long-term value.
The role of the Senior National Project Manager will ensure projects are delivered within approved budgets by managing financial planning, while maintaining accurate records and highlighting exceptions early. You will also produce regular project reports and updates for senior management, governance boards, and stakeholders, ensuring transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making throughout the project life cycle.
To be considered for the role of a Senior National Project Manager, you'll need:
1. Proven Project Management Expertise
Demonstrated ability to lead and deliver complex construction, conservation, and engagement projects through full life cycles using a structured project management framework.
2. Leadership and Team Development
Experience in inspiring and managing multidisciplinary teams, including line management and mentoring of project managers to support their professional growth.
3. Financial and Risk Management Skills
Strong capability in managing project budgets responsibly, identifying and mitigating risks, and ensuring financial performance is tracked and reported accurately and on time.
4. Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring collaboration and alignment throughout project delivery.
5. Strategic Alignment and Organisational Impact
Skilled in aligning project outcomes with organisational goals, embedding public engagement and conservation awareness into project delivery.
Interviews will be held week commencing Monday 24th November 2025 on Microsoft Teams.
