About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF INDEPENDENT LIVES

Adult Social Care in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where our passionate, caring and committed professionals do brilliant work every day.

Mrs D was frail and unwell. Her son was her main carer, but he wasn’t coping. We stepped in to help, but they were hostile to outside agencies. They’d always lived together and were terrified they’d be split up. Our social worker did a great job persuading Mrs D to get hospital treatment and a temporary stay in a care home. In an epic effort throughout COVID, she gained the son’s trust and sorted all the repairs, carers and nurses needed so that Mrs D could come home to live with her son. We also got Mr D regular respite and a personal budget awarded in recognition of him as her carer. After all, there’s nothing more important than living the life you want.

The Role:

As a Social Worker working with older adults who are experiencing physical frailty, mental health problems and other long term conditions, you’ll make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s success. Undertaking need and risk assessments, establishing service users’ eligibility and generating and reviewing care plans, you’ll identify carers and appraise their support plans. Highlighting, investigating and managing any safeguarding issues that arise, and maintaining up to date records of all the work you do, we’ll also expect you to attend supervision sessions with your line manager where you’ll focus on workload management and your professional and personal development.

Committed to keeping abreast of the latest legislation, governmental policies and departmental procedures, you’ll attend local social work conferences which may include Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) forums or departmental-specific meetings related to social work. In addition, you’ll contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings, ward rounds, liaison groups and case reviews, and keep up to speed with the latest developments and issues related to your practice.

Once approved as an AMHP, you’ll make an important contribution to our borough’s duty rota system of managing Mental Health Act requests, referrals and assessments, take responsibility for maintaining key competencies, and ensure that you undertake the minimum mandatory AMHP-related training. Acting as a Practice Assessor for students who are studying for mental health related social work qualifications, if (or when) you’re qualified as a Best Interest assessor we’ll also ask you to take part in our system of managing BIA assessments.

Please refer to the for more information.

About You:

To be a success in this important role you’ll have well developed experience of working with adults from a diverse range of ethnic and cultural groups who are living with severe and enduring mental health problems. It’s vital that you possess well developed knowledge of our Department’s statutory responsibilities, including child and adult protection procedures, and practical understanding of current legislation and guidance, including the Mental Health Act 1983, the Care Act 2014, the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and the Children’s Act 1989.

A confident written and verbal communicator, you should be ready to work with a diverse range of multi-disciplinary statutory and non-statutory teams and professionals, and be capable of applying the principles of equal opportunities to your duties. There’ll be times when you’re working in potentially stressful environments so you should be calm under pressure, able to prioritise your workload and evaluate your practice, and accept constructive criticism from your colleagues.

Committed to treating our service users with respect and dignity while adopting a culturally sensitive approach which considers the needs of the whole person, we’ll expect you to have a flexible approach to your diary, and be ready to occasionally extend your working day if required. When it comes to qualifications you should have a degree or its equivalent in Social Work, be registered with Social Work England, and hold (or be prepared to attain) an Approved Mental Health Professional, Best Interest Assessor or Practice Assessor qualification. It’s also important that you’re a confident user of IT systems and software, and be capable of teaching, mentoring and assessing junior colleagues and learners.
