Food and Nutrition Graduate Trainee Teacher – Salaried ITT Route

Location: Wandsworth, near Clapham Junction
Salary: £28,000–£32,000 per year, paid directly by the school
Training: Salaried Initial Teacher Training (ITT)
Contract: Permanent, full-time
Start date: ASAP
Interviews: Immediate interviews available

Are you a Food and Nutrition graduate who would like to turn your specialist knowledge into a rewarding teaching career?

A welcoming and ambitious secondary school in Wandsworth, conveniently located near Clapham Junction, is seeking an enthusiastic Food and Nutrition graduate to join its team through a salaried Initial Teacher Training route.

This opportunity allows you to earn a salary of £28,000–£32,000 while completing your teacher training. Your salary will be paid directly by the school, meaning you can develop your teaching skills in a real classroom without following an unpaid training route.

About Initial Teacher Training

Initial Teacher Training, commonly known as ITT, is the professional training through which graduates develop the knowledge, skills and practical experience needed to become effective teachers.

As a salaried ITT trainee, you will be based in the school and become part of its teaching team from the beginning. You will gradually take on teaching responsibilities as your confidence and experience grow, with support from experienced colleagues throughout the programme.

Your training will include:

  • Planning and delivering engaging Food and Nutrition lessons
  • Teaching pupils about nutrition, healthy eating, food preparation and practical cookery
  • Developing effective behaviour-management strategies
  • Assessing pupils’ work and monitoring their progress
  • Adapting lessons for pupils with different abilities and needs
  • Understanding food hygiene, health and safety in practical lessons
  • Creating an inclusive and positive classroom environment
  • Receiving lesson observations, constructive feedback and coaching
  • Completing structured professional development and training sessions
  • Working closely with an experienced subject mentor

The programme will combine practical classroom experience with the professional study required as part of teacher training. You will receive regular mentoring and protected development time, helping you build your skills in a structured and supportive environment.

Unlike a traditional university-led training route, this salaried pathway enables you to earn while you train and apply what you learn directly in the classroom. It is particularly suitable for graduates who are ready to begin working in a school and want to develop through practical experience.

About the school

The school serves a diverse community and is committed to ensuring that every pupil receives an excellent education. It provides a positive and inclusive environment where pupils are encouraged to work hard, develop confidence and achieve their potential.

Food and Nutrition plays an important role in helping pupils develop practical skills and understand the connection between food, health and wellbeing. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to share their specialist knowledge and make the subject engaging, relevant and accessible.

Staff benefit from a collaborative culture, clear expectations and a strong commitment to professional development. As a trainee teacher, you will join a supportive team that understands the importance of high-quality mentoring during the early stages of a teaching career.

The school is based in Wandsworth, near Clapham Junction, and benefits from excellent transport links across London.

The role

You will:

  • Train to become a confident and effective Food and Nutrition teacher
  • Support and deliver engaging theoretical and practical lessons
  • Use your specialist degree knowledge to inspire and educate pupils
  • Promote an understanding of nutrition, healthy lifestyles and informed food choices
  • Teach practical food preparation and cookery skills
  • Develop your lesson-planning, assessment and behaviour-management skills
  • Work closely with experienced teachers and a dedicated mentor
  • Take on increasing classroom responsibility as your training progresses
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school
  • Continue developing within a permanent, school-based position

The ideal candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Holds a degree in Food and Nutrition, Nutrition or a closely related subject
  • Has a genuine desire to train as a teacher
  • Is passionate about food, nutrition, health and education
  • Enjoys working with young people
  • Can communicate specialist ideas clearly and enthusiastically
  • Is confident supporting both classroom-based and practical activities
  • Is organised, reflective and open to feedback
  • Demonstrates resilience, initiative and a willingness to learn
  • Has high expectations for every pupil
  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

Previous school or classroom experience would be helpful but is not essential. Applications are welcomed from graduates who can demonstrate strong subject knowledge, enthusiasm and the potential to become inspiring teachers.

What the school offers

  • A salaried Initial Teacher Training route
  • A salary of £28,000–£32,000, paid directly by the school
  • A permanent, full-time position
  • Practical classroom experience from the outset
  • A structured programme of training and professional development
  • Regular mentoring, lesson observations and constructive feedback
  • Support from experienced teachers and school leaders
  • Increasing teaching responsibility at an appropriate pace
  • Excellent opportunities for long-term career progression
  • A convenient location near Clapham Junction with excellent transport links

Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and immediate interviews are available. The successful candidate will start as soon as possible, subject to the necessary safeguarding and pre-employment checks.

Apply now to earn while you train and begin your career as a Food and Nutrition teacher through a supportive, school-based ITT programme.
