Kitchen Catering Assistant - Peers Dining Group Restaurant

House of Lords - Catering and Retail Services

BELONG HERE. TOGETHER, WE MAKE PARLIAMENT HAPPEN.

As a Kitchen Catering Assistant, you'll play an important role in supporting the UK's parliamentary democracy. Your work will help Members carry out their responsibilities effectively - contributing to something bigger than any one role.

You'll be part of a collaborative community, working alongside colleagues from a wide range of professions. Together, we make Parliament happen.

You'll be based on the Parliamentary Estate in Westminster - a unique working environment shaped by history and powered by the people who work here today.

You'll play a key supporting role within the kitchen brigade, assisting chefs in maintaining high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and food preparation.

You'll support the preparation of food and contribute to the basic cooking of simple hot items, including snacks and light dishes, ensuring the smooth running of service across the Peers' Dining operation.

The Peers' Dining Room operation is a refined, service-led environment, requiring teamwork, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic.

This is an excellent opportunity to work within a prestigious fine dining environment, supporting the delivery of high-quality food and service for Members, their guests, and staff.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you'll:

  • Assist chefs with a variety of food preparation, service and basic cooking tasks, helping to ensure a high-quality catering service.
  • Support the preparation and cooking of simple hot snacks and light dishes, such as sandwiches, toasted items, soups and other basic menu items, under supervision.
  • Help maintain high standards of food hygiene, cleanliness and safety throughout all aspects of your work.
  • Assist with stock rotation, deliveries and the safe storage of food and supplies.
  • Help maintain clean, organised and compliant storage areas.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a professional and supportive kitchen team.
  • Demonstrate a positive, reliable and proactive approach to your work.
  • Support colleagues and respond to the needs of the team to help ensure a smooth and efficient service.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who can bring their skills and experience to make a meaningful contribution here.

You'll have:

  • Positive, reliable and enthusiastic approach to work.
  • Genuine interest in food, catering or hospitality.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Good attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organisation.
  • Openness to feedback and a desire to develop within a professional catering environment.

It would be even better if you have (or are willing to learn):

  • Previous experience in a kitchen, catering, or hospitality role.
  • Experience in a fine dining or high-quality environment.
  • Knowledge of basic food preparation and simple cooking.
  • Interest in progressing within a professional kitchen.

For full details, please see the job description.

What you'll get in return

Working at the House of Lords means joining a community that values your wellbeing, growth and contribution.

You'll benefit from:

  • 30 days annual leave (rising to 35 after one year).
  • Generous Civil Service pension scheme.
  • A comprehensive Parliamentary health and wellbeing programme.
  • Access to a wide range of learning and development opportunities across diverse professions.
  • The chance to witness democracy in action and work in a place of historic national significance.

The work we do is vital to the House of Lords - the second chamber of the UK Parliament. It plays a critical role in making laws, scrutinising government, and providing independent expertise on national issues.
