DEPARTMENT: Media Operations
LOCATION: W3 Park Western – site based with 1 to 2 days per week hybrid/home working.
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £50,000 - £60,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE Operations Managers in Media Operations – Location play a key leadership role in shaping and delivering high-quality outside broadcast services that support production across the organisation. Managing a team of around 13, they oversee service delivery and staff development, working closely with production, planning & delivery, and other operational teams. Operations Managers contribute to long-term planning, budgeting, and service innovation, ensuring the team remains supported and responsive to the changing needs of the business. WHY JOIN THE TEAM BBC Media Operations is at the heart of teams delivering incredible content across all our platforms for all audiences. Comprising around nine hundred people, it manages the craft and production operations for the BBC’s news, radio, and some sport services across London, Salford, and Birmingham - capturing, editing, and producing our output 24x7 for TV, radio, and digital platforms. Our team are experts in their field with exceptional technical, operational and production creativity at their heart. Working closely together with our editorial colleagues, we co-create content reaching millions of people across the UK and the World daily. The team is also responsible for the management of production services, editing and post-production, stores, and some audio, fleet vehicles and OB bases in England. Media Operations – Location is responsible for resourcing and supporting outside broadcasts across BBC Radio and News. The team also includes Production Services, who provide equipment, training, and support to self-shooters. We play a key role in delivering some of the BBC’s most high-profile events, spanning Music (such as Glastonbury and The Proms), Sport (including the Euros and the Olympics), and News (from party conferences and elections to major breaking news stories). YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT: • Lead strategic development of services, skills, and solutions as part of the management team.
• Manage and develop a team of around 13 staff, overseeing training, performance, and professional growth.
• Ensure high-quality service delivery, working closely with production, technology, and operational teams to continuously improve standards.
• Maintain compliance and safety, ensuring adherence to health and safety legislation, risk assessments, and union relations.
• Support business planning and budgeting, contributing to scheduling, cost control, and long-term departmental goals. YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA: • Experience gained in at senior level in an operations environment, ideally media/broadcasting or similar
• A working understanding of production and logistical processes in location work
• Ability to manage relationships at all levels inside and outside the BBC
• Demonstrable potential or experience in managing teams
