We have an exciting opportunity to join the Pharmacy Clinical Services Team at King's College NHS Trust as Senior Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician.

This is a 6-month fix-term contract

Location: Denmark Hill, London

The post holder will support the advanced pharmacy technician for clinical services in developing and maintaining the medicines management service at ward level on a rotational basis; This includes the assessment of patients own drugs, medicines reconciliation, transcribing medicines, medicines (including controlled drugs) returns, counselling patients about their medicines and co-ordinating supply of discharge medicines which includes dispensing TTAs on the wards.

The post holder will support the induction and training of ward-based pharmacy technicians, pharmacy support workers, pre-registration pharmacy technicians, trainee pharmacists and pharmacists.


The post holder will be a professional registered pharmacy technician who has achieved the Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification or equivalent in the pre-registration pharmacy technician qualification.

Main duties of the job

  • To maintain and develop high quality, consistent, patient-focused pharmacy services to wards in conjunction with clinical and patient services staff.
  • To complete Drug Histories, POD checks, Ordering and counselling accurately and in high standards accordingly to Clinical Services procedures.

  • To be the technical link person between wards and pharmacy, and to manage calls and requests as appropriate for the pharmacy team, via the WiFi phones.

  • To manage and support the safe, accurate and timely supply of medicines to wards and clinics, and other areas as required, by managing the medication supply chain in conjunction with Pharmacy team members, Stores and Distribution staff.

  • To adhere to and maintain quality standards and performance indicators for service developments implemented.

  • To support the Pharmacy Clinical Services team in the development of the medicines management pharmacy technician service.

  • Be able to accuracy check clinically screened dispensed prescriptions, according to policy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To deputise for the Advanced Pharmacy Technician - Clinical Services during periods of absence, taking responsibility for the smooth running of the MMPT/MMPA team.
  • To assist with the writing, implementation and updating of policies and procedures specific to the dispensary service.
  • To attend all relevant meetings, including the cross site meetings, with the aim to standardise practice across sites

Person specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 plus accredited underpinning knowledge [BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent] or equivalent.
  • Registered as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification or working torwards
  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice

Desirable criteria
  • HEE Medicines Optimisation course or equivalent
  • Successfully completion of development courses relevant to practice

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of all regulations and legislation relevant to pharmacy, dispensary and clinical services
  • Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems
  • Substantial post registration experience in hospital setting
  • Experience of training and supervision of pharmacy staff
  • Experience of delivery service to patients or the public.

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of research and audit work

  • Able to participate in pharmacy 7-day service including the Late Duty, Weekend and Bank Holiday Service.
