We’d love to hear from candidates who share our commitment to Co-production and Independent Living. ‘Doing things with residents not to them’ is a key Council priority. We believe it is better for everyone when people are fully involved in the decisions that affect their lives. Our pioneering resident-led Disabled People's Commission set out key recommendations for co-production in its ‘Nothing about Disabled people without Disabled people’ report. Co-production is all about residents working together with people like Councillors and Council officers and others to make the Borough as accessible and inclusive as we can.

We are the first local authority to commit to co-producing Independent Living as fought for by Disabled people. This means that Disabled residents are central to shaping what Independent Living looks like for themselves. Our aim is to make this vision a reality so all who face barriers can live in the community with the same rights, choices and freedom as anybody else.

We use the Social Model of Disability to frame our approach, and we are proud to work in ways that promote rights, equality and inclusion.

There’s a lot of other great work going on in Adult Social Care. We are proud to be the only local authority in England to have abolished charging for support at home and in the community.

We believe in supporting and developing our staff to do the best job to make a positive difference with people. We are committed to high quality leadership, management and supervision and valuing our staff through ongoing career development.
