Workshop Manager

We are seeking a Workshop Manager to lead and oversee the end‑to‑end repair and refurbishment operations for a major public transport technology programme. This role provides strategic and operational leadership to the workshop organisation, ensuring the effective repair of assets, strong performance management, and high-quality technical outputs. The Workshop Manager will guide a multi‑tiered team comprising workshop team leaders, repair engineers, technical specialists, and administrative staff, as well as act as the primary management point for the logistics subcontractors.
Key duties include:
- Provide overall leadership of the workshop organisation, ensuring efficient, high‑quality repair and refurbishment of all returned assets and components.
- Oversee team leaders, technical specialists, repair engineers, stores and logistics interfaces, ensuring workflows, processes, and standards are consistently met.
- Ensure adherence to quality standards, repair procedures, safety requirements, and contractual KPIs, including turnaround times and technical compliance.
- Serve as the senior escalation point for complex technical or operational issues within the workshop environment.
- Manage the planning and prioritisation of repairs, resources, skills allocation, and capacity across multiple workshop streams.
- Maintain effective governance over spares availability, stock control coordination, and alignment with stores and logistics teams.
- Lead workforce management activities, including performance oversight of team leaders, competencies development, and promoting a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Act as the primary point of leadership for the logistics subcontractors, ensuring SLA compliance, coordinated delivery, and effective alignment with the workshop organisation.
- Support cost estimation, project variation assessments, and future capacity planning in collaboration with senior management.
- Provide regular reporting on workshop performance, quality metrics, MTTR trends, risks and mitigations, and improvement opportunities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in engineering, electronics, telecommunications, industrial management, or a related discipline.
- Significant experience leading technical workshop operations or repair centres, ideally within transport, technology, or industrial service environments.
- Strong understanding of electronic, electro‑mechanical and PC‑based equipment repair processes.
- Proven leadership experience managing multi‑disciplinary teams, including team leaders, engineers, technical specialists, and administrative roles.
- Experience with performance management, process governance, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.
- Strong capability in resource planning, workflow optimisation, and managing multiple repair streams.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and meet contractual KPIs, including MTTR, quality standards, and compliance requirements.
- Excellent stakeholder management and strong communication skills, including leadership of subcontractor relationships.
- Ability to operate effectively in high‑volume, fast‑paced, and quality‑critical operational environments.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience working in large‑scale transport technology or fare collection environments.
- Knowledge of quality management frameworks relevant to workshop operations.
- Experience with spares planning, logistics coordination, and stock control systems.
- Background in diagnostic engineering, root‑cause analysis, or development of test/repair methodologies.
