Welfare Officer Job Description

The Welfare Officer’s role is to work closely with the Management Team, on peak shifts, ensuring all

guests and team are safe. This includes ensuring any vulnerable guests are looked after and supported,

any intoxicated guests are safely escorted from the venue, identifying and reporting drug use,

supporting the team with refusal of service, ensuring there is water for guests to drink and reporting on

all Safety Security and Licensing activities.

Welfare Officers are a licensed condition and must be on duty Thursday, Friday and Saturday from the

latest of 19:00 until guest dispersal.

They must be clearly identifiable and work to support both the SIA Door Supervisors and the Venue

Management where guests may be considered vulnerable.

What you’ll be getting up to:

• Monitor all guests within the venue, identifying any guest who may show signs of vulnerability

through:

o Intoxication (slurred speech, unsteady on their feet, sleeping, vomiting etc)

o Unwanted attention

o Being left alone by friends/ colleagues

o Limited access to phones/ internet to book transport

o Showing signs of distress

• Approach guests who appear vulnerable in a friendly and open manner, asking if they need any

help or support. They should maintain good communication with the Manager on duty and SIA

Door Team on any concerns throughout the shift

• Support the Bar Team after refusal of alcohol sales are made and / or guests are asked to leave by

SIA Door Supervisors. Ensure the guest involved is:

o Taken to the nominated welfare space, away from loud music and crowds

o Reunited with friends or colleagues

o Offered water

o Offered support in getting home (i.e. by booking a taxi, escorting them to local transport

links etc)

o Able to leave the venue without risk of personal injury

• Support the Duty Manager, SIA Door Supervisors and at times Canary Wharf Private Security

during the dispersal period, monitoring guests as they leave the premises and offering support

to guests as required

• Log all interventions of welfare in the ‘Welfare Log’ at the close of business. This must include

the time, details of the support offered and the resolution. These must be checked by the

duty manager and cross referenced against all refusal of alcohol sales

You lead by example, turning up to work with good personal hygiene, in uniform, on time and ready

to proactively contribute to your shift.

Who You Will Be:

• Caring and empathetic

• Have a calm head in what can be overwhelming situations

• Someone with experience within late night bars/ venues as either an operator or security

• Strong spatial awareness

• Friendly, approachable and helpful

• Able to multi task

• Be extremely reliable, trustworthy and integral

You must be:

• First-aid trained

• Conflict Management Trained

We will provide:

• Radio and ear piece

• High Visibility vest with ‘Welfare Officer’ on the reverse

• Map of Canary Wharf and awareness of local transport links

• Access to a fully stocked first aid kit in the ‘welfare space’

• Access to PET water bottles in the ‘welfare space’

• Access to site phone to support ordering Taxis

• Access to local taxi contact numbers

• Welfare Log Book
