Primary Teaching Assistant

One classroom. Different children. Different kinds of support.

Some pupils need you beside them to access a lesson.

Some need help managing their attention, emotions or behaviour.

Others simply need a concept explained differently, a little more practice or someone to give them the confidence to have another go.

This Teaching Assistant role is about being able to move between those different needs throughout the school day.

We're working with a welcoming primary school looking for a TA who can provide dedicated support to pupils with Autism (ASC), ADHD and social, emotional and behavioural needs , while also helping lower-attaining children make progress across the curriculum.

Not just one type of support

Part of your role will involve focused one-to-one SEND support .

You'll get to know individual pupils, understand the strategies that work for them and provide the consistency they need to participate successfully in school.

At other points, your focus may shift to the wider classroom.

You could be working with a small group who need additional help with literacy or numeracy, reinforcing something the teacher has introduced or encouraging a child who lacks confidence to tackle a task independently.

You'll be expected to:

• Provide one-to-one support for pupils with ASC, ADHD and additional social, emotional or behavioural needs
• Help pupils understand and access classroom learning
• Support lower-attaining children individually and in small groups
• Reinforce literacy, numeracy and wider curriculum activities
• Use agreed strategies to support behaviour and emotional regulation
• Encourage confidence, participation and independence
• Recognise when a child needs additional support - and when it's appropriate to step back
• Monitor progress and share useful observations with teaching staff
• Work closely with class teachers and the SEND team
• Contribute to a calm, positive and inclusive classroom

We're looking for a good all-rounder

You don't necessarily need years of school-based SEND experience.

Previous experience with primary-aged children would be valuable, particularly if you've supported children who learn, communicate or behave differently.

Experience from care, youth work or another child-focused environment may also be relevant.

More importantly, you'll need to be patient, observant and adaptable .

A strategy that works brilliantly with one pupil may achieve very little with another, so you'll need to listen to colleagues, get to know the children and be willing to change your approach.

You'll also need:

• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• The confidence to work both one-to-one and with groups
• An understanding of positive behaviour support
• The ability to establish appropriate, trusting relationships with children
• A commitment to inclusion and safeguarding

Before Appointment

You'll need the legal right to work in the UK and satisfactory professional references.

An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service is required, or you'll need to be willing to obtain one.
